From the beginning, having the Shah in was a totally unwise decision because it will reflect a negative image to the new Iranian government. Not only that, also they were in a revolutionary situation where all people are radicalized. This crisis was of the nastiest crises to the American people because it affected them directly and affected public opinion in the United States for 444 days. Correspondingly, I believe that it’s Carter’s baggiest failure and if it didn’t happen or it was managed differently, I would probably have a different opinion on his foreign policy. What is worse than the problem itself is the way he interacted with it.
Lead by Senator Joe McCarthy, this modern witch hunt for communism ruined lives and spread lies, with the initial victims being the disliked, the outsiders. One of the first of those blacklisted was Owen Lattimore. He was outspoken about his unpopular liberal views and so it was easy for McCarthy to shift blame and suspicion towards him (Victims of McCarthyism). McCarthy played off the existing fear of communism left behind by World War II to gain support for his lagging political career by fighting a problem that did not really exist. As in The Crucible, people easily accepted that Lattimore and others like him were to blame, in this case for being communist.
They would create slogans saying “Better dead than red.” Communism changed the way people acted around others in the 1960’s. America’s citizens were probably very afraid because they didn’t want anyone to mistakenly identify them as a communist. This made people begin to turn on each other especially in the film industry.
His casual approach to sexual violence mirrors the violence throughout 1984. In this scenario, the sexual violence is dehumanizing the woman in the movie, just like women are dehumanized by sexual assault in society today. Despite sometimes appearing as a foreign problem, the dismissal of sexual assault is very prominent in society today. The United States 45th president, Donald Trump, has allegedly sexually assaulted nineteen women (NPR). These accusations surfaced before his election and after he bragged about “grabbing p***y”.
What is even more dishonorable, is that Nixon had secret tapes that he secretly recorded with 3,700 hours of meetings and calls in executive offices. These tapes were the fault of the entire scandal, which was detrimental to Nixon’s presidency. Nixon refused to turn them over and eventually handing over edited transcripts of the tapes. In order to hide the incriminating evidence, Nixon compulsively lied throughout the whole predicament to the press and to the people of America-even the government. Eventually, Nixon handed over the tapes as commanded by the US Supreme Court.
In Roberts’ view, “At the height of his power in 1953, McCarthy became chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and used the platform to make further charges of Communist spying.” (Roberts 21). Particularly, this shows the secrets the government has been hiding which leads to Americans questioning their loyalty. Moreover, this ties into Americans betraying each other because it goes to show how McCarthyism held the power to enact this action. The government 's mischievous actions led everyone not to trust them.
"Abolish the penny? " This is a question that has frolicked around the economic scene for decades. Advocates of abolishing the penny call upon claims supported by faulty evidence, for instance, "Two thirds of [pennies] immediately drop out of circulation" (Source C). This claim is fatally misleading as studies have been conducted to show that "the annual rate pennies dissappear from circulation is surprisingly similar to all other forms of coinage -- around 5.6 percent" (Source C). So why should we, as Americans, abolish something as symbolic to our national heritage as the penny, without proper reasoning?
In the 1980’s advocate for the homeless, Mitch Snyder, claimed that of the 3 million homeless Americans “ 45 homeless people die each second - which would mean a whopping 1.4 billion dead homeless every year” (86). The best argument made by the authors is that Synder most likely misspoke and “ meant to say that one homeless person died every forty-five seconds, that's still 701,000 dead homeless people every year” (86). Snyder's figure of 3 million homeless Americans was a mere fabrication. His math proved and estimate proved to be completely misdirected. The counter arguments hurt Synder by making him look like a less reliable source.
Senator McCarthy denounces more than two hundred government workers for being card-carrying communists. However, with the concerns of communism increasing in the East Asia and Europe, he believes that these accusations are justifiable due to the communists who allegedly infiltrated the U.S. government. “Known as McCarthyism, the paranoid hunt for infiltrators was notoriously difficult on writers and entertainers, many of whom were labeled as communist sympathizers and were unable to continue working” (213). These accusations are unjust to the people who are not actually communist sympathizers, it is difficult for one to speak up against these falsities. Furthermore, in The Crucible Francis Nurse explains to Danforth how the girls are just pretending.
The D in Donald is for Disaster In heat of the upcoming Presidential Election, the United States has become extremely divided based upon who is supporting whom. Being as opinionated as us Americans can be, a lot of inappropriate things have been said from both the candidates and their supporters. One candidate in particular whose opinions have affected the most people, is also leading in the polls, Donald Trump.
Northern neglect killed reconstruction because the North was worried about the corrupt government. As president, Grant noticed frauds and scandals in government too (Doc. C). Since he was focusing on the scandals and frauds his focus on the Reconstruction split between the frauds and the Reconstruction. They also thought their government was corrupt because there were
The media has portrayed Trump to be a racist, homophobic, sexist, bigot. And Hilary has a corrupt women who would ultimately would be the best of two evils. With no type of qualifications to run our country. Various sexual assault charges, and racial discrimination, Trump was stamped as the poster man for what American doesn 't need to prosper. The media exposing example after example as to why no good can come from him as president and isn 't concerned with change only concerned with power.
Abigail Girard Mrs. Rolfs AP Language 16 October 2016 Eugene Robinson in the article, Trump May Be Worse Than Just a Pig, explains that Republican nominee for President is an angry sexual predator who uses his fame and wealth to get what he wants, and is losing supporters daily. Robinson supports his suggestion by first explaining how some republicans have abandoned Trump because of a recent tape released of Trump using vulgar words to describe what he does to women; this has made it impossible to pretend that the party has nominated a candidate that could be worthy of presidency. He then claims that Trump is always in a constant rage which causes him to make irrational decisions. Lastly, the author describes how some women have sued Trump,
Both situations spiraled out of control because of ignorance and the use mob mentality. A person who sympathized with Communists was persecuted, just as if someone tried to defend the accused witches of Salem. Parallel to the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials accused hundreds of innocent people of being Communists without any proof. Like Salem, if the accused confessed to communism, they would be blacklisted from their community, but not jailed. Sir William Phips was the Governor of Massachusetts at the time of the salem Witch Trials, and he refused to stop the trials until one of the accusers targeted his wife.
Franklin Roosevelt 's sudden death shook the American public to its roots. Though many had noticed that he looked exhausted in photographs and newsreels, no one seemed prepared for his passing. He had led the United States through an economic depression and the greatest war in human history. A whole generation of Americans had grown up knowing no other president. His social programs during the Great Depression redefined the role of government in Americans ' lives.
