In this topic, I will be exploring the combination of sociopolitical factors that contribute to poverty in a community, otherwise known as comparative disadvantage. I chose Atlanta, not only because I lived near the major city, but also because of its known high, poverty rates. In the past decade, poverty has increased and spread throughout Atlanta. Population and job growth have been occurring rapidly, but so has the urbanization of the city. Growing up near Atlanta, I found that the southern metro area had a vast increase in the distribution of poverty. I will be using “Social Explorer” to examine social characteristics of the city and analyze how those they shaped the city. In this assignment I will also include three maps associated with each characteristic of Atlanta.

There is currently an abandoned building in the Town of Surette and the town is thinking about how to develop it for maximizing the value. There are two options. The first one is to develop the abandoned building into private office space to generate revenue for the town. This option can help the town balance its budget. The second option is to develop the abandoned building into a community center to improve its citizens’ quality of life. I think turning the building into a community center is a better choice. It is quite apparent that youth getting roped into gangs is a huge problem and can only lead to two things, jail or death. Many youth feel like gangs want them and will take care of them. When in all reality the gangs could care less about them, they just use youths to do their dirty work and they are deposable. The only way to stop this problem and get youth the help they need is to create and upkeep programs that actually care about the kids and get them out of gangs or get them before they are in gangs.
