I also realized that my learning skills were different, my reading ability was different, and something’s it took me long to grasp. I didn’t really come from a well off family, but I didn’t mind, even when

Do you have a great friend that is always there for you? Matthew Moss is a great friend and someone who has my back. I originally met Matthew in second grade at Vanderlyn Elementary School. Although I didn 't start being his close friend till around halfway through 7th grade, we have grown into a great pair of amigos. He is as ripped as a torn piece of paper, he 's as funny as a dank meme compilation, he 's as serious as he is hilarious, and he has hair like he gets a haircut every day.
Throughout the last three years, I have worked with the elderly in a nursing home called Aase Haugen as a certified nursing assistant. Since then, I have gained a tremendous amount of respect for registered nurses. Their leadership, passion, and commitment has inspired me to provide great health care to patients now and in my future career as a nurse. I am currently a freshman that has been accepted into the nursing program at Luther College. I think I would be a good candidate for this scholarship, because I put a tremendous amount of heart into my job and truly enjoying helping and assisting the elderly.
The Douglas Honors Diversity scholarship will help me achieve my educational and professional goals in many ways. This scholarship will help me continue my education and career path that I am passionate about. I am the first in my family to pursue a higher education. I am also the first in my family to deviate from a “set” path for me. I come from a family that lives off of state help, so we are not able to pay for a higher education.
Although my family dealt—and still deals— with it every day, the racial identity never was pointed out. As a little kid, I never understood why my dad sometimes was treated differently for me he always was just my dad. Later on I would understand why, but my idea “you are whoever you are” still was my life credo that I never doubted. I have never questioned myself on what I identify as before the conversation with the person that I met once and thought I would forget the next day, but it became the turning point of my life.
I knew this one younger woman who lived in poorly kept housing and went to a school where education didn’t matter as much as it should. And even though her GPA met but did not exceed the scholarships GPA she was still able to win the scholarship. That’s when I realized that the scholarship is not looking for who has the best GPA or test scores, they’re looking for the student who has a story to tell but was still able to overcome it and wants better for him/herself. One of the goals of the scholarship program is to reduce financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need. And I feel that the scholarship has kept its promise to help minority students reduce the loans and debt that they will have in the near future.
As I begin my college education, I want to continue doing my best in order to accomplish my goal of becoming a registered nurse. With the scholarship money I can have the peace of mind of solemnly focusing on college. Students who have to work to continue their education have trouble focusing on school and do not have the extra time to study or go to tutoring sessions. In many cases, having to work while attending college usually leads to failing or dropping the class due to extra stress and the idea of income. As well, this scholarship will give me more time to focus on my education and to continue my volunteer work helping the
My mother once said to me “I don’t want you to end up like me”. At that moment, I knew I had to push myself beyond my ability to make something of myself. I am 9 out of 1079 in my senior class, have a 4.5 GPA and for sure am not afraid of hard work. By receiving this scholarship, it will help my parents and especially myself from having to take out loans and place myself into debt. It will aid me into achieving my future years of education and give me the opportunity to demonstrate that I will not end up like my parents.

I feel I am a well-rounded individual and I hold an optimistic perspective on life because life is too short to do otherwise. I admire your generosity and humbled to even be considered for this scholarship. I am thankful for people who give unselfishly to someone else’s aspirations and it is very heartwarming when someone does.
I deserve this scholarship because I am committed to receiving a higher education. Sophomore and Junior year I didn’t take a study hall because I didn’t want to waste a single opportunity to learn more information. I have put in a lot of effort to do well in school and be active in sports and the community. I would love to be rewarded for my efforts.
This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for students of GVSU, and I am honored to be considered for this scholarship. I believe that I am a great applicant for this scholarship, and that I deserve this scholarship. One reason I deserve this scholarship is because of my strong academic courses. Throughout my high school career, I pushed myself academically by taking a total of 10 AP classes and 7 honors classes. These classes were all challenging, yet I pushed through with determination to complete the classes to the best of my ability.
