The study of sour orange as an alternative mosquito repellent will play a substantial role in our society. The increase in mosquito-borne diseases is a rising problem in the world especially in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide. Thus, defenses against mosquitoes such as mosquito repellents are needed. However, this solution results in another problem – concerns about the potential adverse health effects of insect repellents have increased. This study will try to achieve a newly developed solution that will eliminate or diminish the detrimental side effects of commercial mosquito repellents to humans, livestock, materials, and the environment as most commercial mosquito repellents contain the chemical DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), …show more content…
Rather than treating them as wastes and disposing them which could lead to environmental problems if disposed improperly, they may be treated further to increase its usage in the form of essential oil which if widely accepted by oil-related and insect-repellent related companies, it may also be a good alternative for insect repellents made of synthetic chemicals such as N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide or DEET. In general, the oil extracted from citrus fruit peels will give a wholly different approach that may further promote additional researches relating to oil extraction from citrus fruit peels and creation of natural insect repellents without the synthetic chemicals and the adverse side-effects they carry. Moreover, when widely accepted and commercialized, essential oils from citrus fruit peels will lessen the usage of synthetic chemicals on …show more content…
Nonetheless, not only will the number of mosquito-borne diseases decrease, it will also contribute in alleviating poverty in the country as treatments from mosquito-borne diseases are usually expensive and the poor and malnourished are usually affected the most. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) are also beneficiaries from this study as our research project and study contain useful information that will help provide WHO additional information as they handle global medical problems and the prevention and discovery of new things about health. The DOH, a Filipino governmental organization that handles the health statistics and health of the Filipinos are also beneficiaries as the information from our study will help them support the needs of Filipinos in medicinal supplies and will help increase the awareness of the dangers of mosquitoes, help in educating the people the mosquito menace in the country, how they can defend against it, and the downsides of commercial chemically-made mosquito
In this experiment, Pill bugs were exposed to different environments within a closed space and observed to determine which environment they preferred. The four different environments tested consisted of flowers, dirt, grass, and an empty space. Ten pill bugs were placed within the shoe box and observed for a total of 15 minutes to determine what environment the bugs preferred. The independent variables were the different conditions in each section of the shoe box, while the dependent variable was the behavior the pill bugs displayed. Throughout the experiment, the control variable was the empty section of the shoe box.
Due to this the research hypothesis was supported. After further calculations if a person wanted to collect 64 pill bugs all he/she needs to do is spray this mixture of sugar around his house and everywhere in his backyard. Two chi-square tests were performed on the data to determine if the
A Demonstration of Chemotaxis Between Flies and Various Substances (Sugar vs Bacteria) Abstract: The purpose of this lab based on the Drosophila melanogaster (the common fruit fly) reactions. Since the fly has been studied and observed for many years, and known for its unique chemotactic attractions to different stimuli, it was an ideal organism for the study being conducted. In the experiment the purpose was to be able to figure out whether the flies would be more attracted to sugar or bacteria.
The pesticides have harmful chemicals, called Neonicotinoids. When bees go to pollinate a flower, they store their nectar in something called a honey stomach, and the bees take to their pollinated substance to their hive. But the pesticides get into the nectar, and the nectar is put into the bee’s stomach, and they get sick. These chemicals are not only harming the bees, but birds as well. In the Netherlands, bird populations dropped in areas where neonicotinoid was used.
K&U5- Diagnosis of malaria Early and accurate detection of malaria is required to make sure that the patient is treated in time and also to prevent further spread of infection within the neighbourhood through local mosquitoes. If diagnosis and treatment is delayed, it may increase the chance of death of the patient, therefore malaria should be treated as a possible medical emergency and health practitioners should know how to diagnose and treat malaria instantly. A health practitioner should know what the signs and symptoms are of a patient infected with malaria.
The hands were washed. Goggles were placed on the eyes for extra protection. A petri dish containing nine pill bugs were obtained and set aside for later use. Two water bottles’ ends were cut and taped to each other creating a miniature tunnel for the pill bugs to crawl in. 50 mL of tap water was obtained in a small beaker and then was slowly moved into the lid of the bottle using a funnel.

T. Coraghessen Boyle’s tone in his narrative “Top of the Food Chain”, conveys a casual conversation with a senator about the use of DDT in Borneo. This casual conversation also exemplifies his casual and reckless approach to the solution of insects plaguing the people of Borneo. Boyle’s passion blindfolded reasonable and reliable alternatives to help the insect problem. The ramification of dealing with the pesky insects causing disease and burden to this developing country were ill-researched and exemplifies Boyle’s casual approach and tone. Boyle’s passion to help a “2 year old so black with flies and mosquitos it looks like he’s wearing long johns”, blinded all reason to do good research and understand the risks upstream when mosquitos and
The subjects were infected by mosquitoes or by injections of extracts of the mucous glands of mosquitoes. After having contracted malaria, the victims were treated with various drugs to test their relative efficacy. Over one-thousand victims were used in these experiments. Many died and others suffered severe pain and permanent

At this time, there is little to no evidence that these pesticides are increasing yields from plants they are applied to. However, there has been evidence of the pesticides killing bees or causing damage to their nervous systems, which impedes their ability to forage and fly. Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health preformed a study which found that 70% of pollen and honey collected from local bees contained at least trace amounts of neonicotinoids. Levels found from these samples were enough to cause detrimental health effects. In a separate study, they found that over half of plants at a major garden store contained neonicotinoids.
