In amy tan’s “ fish cheeks “, Tan’s uses a motif to express her main message. The motif that is carried throughout the story is culture and a message she ties into that is that always keep culture close to who you are. In the short story tan tells us something she learned from her mom was if you are “want[ing] to be the same as american on the outside… but [on the] inside you must always be chinese.” ( tan 7 ) tan tells us this because she wants us to realize that it doesn't matter who or what we are; meaning if we are wanting to be american great but keep your culture close to and apart of you.
The bruise is shown as a motif because it represents the theme. Almost like a living person, it argues against Kayse for being ungrateful and reminds her she left her old home for a favorable reason. This goes with the theme since she feels guilty complaining about what she has although it’s better for her. Magoon mentions the motif again after Kayse says something she regrets to her mother.
“Nothing is more wretched than the mind of a man conscious of guilt,” said the historical Roman playwright, Plautus. A motif is a recurring narrative element, such as a pattern or symbol. Authors often use motifs to reveal an underlying theme of the literature or symbolize a specific character or idea. Alice Hoffman utilizes the motif of minnows in her book “The River King” to reveal that Carlin had to let go of her guilt to overcome the grief of losing Gus. When Gus died, Carlin felt that she was at fault because they had been in a fight before his death, and this led to extreme feelings of guilt eating her alive every day.
In this story, “Their Eyes Were Watching God” there is many examples of motif. One example I have came across was the communities that Jaine lived in. None of them fit her and she didn't fit in them. Even in her hometown when she was little. “Us lived dere havin’ fun till de chillun at school got to teasin’ me ‘bout livin’ in de white folks’ back-yard.
During the war years the cut of women’s fashion became less structured (Tortora and Marcketti, 2015) and women began to wear practical uniforms and workwear, in particular trench-coats, jodhpurs for the land army, and there was a gradual revelation of the lower part of women’s legs with a new emphasis on shoes and stockings (Fischel, 2012). During the Elizabethan Era, however, there was an emphasis on structure, and clothing such as the sleeves were padded out. These tight or stiffened enormous sleeves made the arms appear separate from the body and also hindered
The first literary term I will be discussing is a motif. A motif is a recurrent design or pattern in a literary work. Two short stories that this literary term is prevalent through is “The Things They Carried”
A lord was given the freedom to wear anything, and no constraints. Knights had freedom of clothing depending on how much their land was worth. A knight with land worth 400 marks has a few limitations, but may dress as they will, while a knight with land worth 200 marks has many restraints. Correspondingly, as people continue down the line of rank, they get more and more regulations. The royal families also have absolutely no restriction as to what to wear (Mortimer).
Fundamentals of Fashion And Their Reflection In “The Next Black” Aaliya Gujral Unquestionably clothes are a prominent part of our lives. They help us express who we are and often represent our sex, occupation, age and social standing. Clothing has been used by humans for thousands of years, and comes in a variety of forms. It has evolved throughout the course of history to include more fabrics, patterns, styles and designs.
Tailored clothes were also designed with much more aesthetic detail such as pictures being “embroidered by hand” (Source 2. 5) which meant clothes took hours upon hours to finish. These fancy clothes were a symbol of wealth because only the rich could afford to have these clothes custom made for them. Lower or middle class people often had their own family members making clothes for them because they could not afford to have a tailor. Most clothes made by lower to middle class people were only made of “one or two pieces of cloth” (Source 2. 4) in order to conserve cloth for other clothing. As time when on tailoring changed from making fancy designs to making clothes that fit the body well and looked good.

This is perhaps to show the high status and regard of the society to them. Note that it is those who are in the higher class who are fond of adorning themselves of more expensive and flamboyant body decorations to show their

Appropriation is the act of borrowing and changing the meaning of cultural products, images, slogans and elements as well as reusing existing elements to create new works and meanings. Many artists believe that in borrowing existing images or elements of imagery, they are able to recreate the idea as it is now placed within a new concept. This essay will discuss how appropriation has been used in cultural and social contexts in order to create controversy and sell products, as well as be a form of expression. Pop culture often uses brash ways when trying to provide interest in society. As humans we are constantly wanting more and are never fully satisfied without entertainment, thus in order to meet these high demands many often turn to cultural appropriation as a void of entertainment.
