One of these holidays is the New Year, called Oshogatsu the most important holiday in Japan. As stated in the book, “ ...the most important holiday in Japan and one that brings the whole culture to a three-day halt” (Pg 130). Cathy also states ,” … for three days virtually all shops and buildings are closed” (Pg 130). This statement shows the holiday and the traditional ways that go into the holiday. It also shows how this holiday brings everyone together to celebrate together. Another traditional way of the holiday is striking a temple bell 180 times in Japanese temples, which cast out the old worries. Another holiday that Cathy celebrates in Japan is Obon. Cathy states ,” Obon is for closing off unfinished business for restoring bonds, for healing and remembering”(Pg 210). During Obon boys and girls go through a ceremony that initiates them into adulthood, and during the holiday people celebrate together. Into The Wild English Final “Into The Wild” is a partial biography written by Jon Krakauer describing how the body of Chris McCandless was found in the wilderness of Alaska. Mr. McCandless was a gifted athlete and scholar, who from an early age shows deep intensity, passion, and a strict moral compass. He discovered that his father had a second family while McCandless was growing up but wasn't told until he graduated high school. He wanted to leave society because to pursue a life of adventure and not apathy/routine while also trying to get away from his sleepwalker, money-driven/materialistic parents. He donated his $25,000 to charity, burned his wallet, drove his car to the middle of nowhere, and disappear in April of 1992.
Holidays celebrate an area’s culture and/or the day(s) it commemorates with various festivities and traditions. In Theodore Geisel’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the light-hearted denizens of Who-Ville are preparing to celebrate Christmas. For the Whos, it is a time of fun and merryness, in which they sing and play with one another. This is a time of camaraderie and fellowship between everyone in the town. Apart from this is the antagonist, the Grinch, who dreads the holiday along with the singing, feasting, and other festive activities that the holiday inspires.

The first impressions of the novel were not positive. “Obasan” by Joy Kogawa was published in 1981 and has a lot of meaning towards racism that occurred in Canada. Kogawa’s novel draws the relationship between Japanese and Canadians during the world War Two in the reader’s mind and describes how hard it was for Japanese people to live in Canada during that period. One of the biggest themes the author uses is “Silence”. To find the theme silence is quite easy as it can be found everywhere in the novel.
In the mid-nineteenth century, a girl named Ni-bo-wi-se-gwe (Oona) was born in pitch darkness in the middle of the day when the sun and moon crossed paths. The book Night Flying Woman by Ignatia Broker is the biography of Broker’s great-great-grandmother, Oona. It describes Oona’s life through what Broker has learned from her grandparents when they passed down the stories. In the book, one of the main themes is passing traditions on. I chose this theme because, in the book, passing traditions on is a major part of the characters’ culture.
"I'd always heard how Ganjitsu, New Year's Day, was a festival for the Japanese... I find there's something more spiritual in Japan on this day of renewal." (Page 95). Since Matsu and Sachi live in Japan, they celebrate Ganjitsu and mend conflict with Kenzo to forget the past and predicaments. This is a time where they can put the war, diseases, etc behind them and celebrate purity.
“Champion of the World” In the excerpt, “Champion of the World,” Maya Angelou recalls of a specific time when growing up during the African American oppression. In paragraph one, Angelou uses the method of description in order to indicate that a crucial event is about to begin. She uses phrases from the passage such as, “The last inch of space was filled,” and “Uncle Willie had turned the radio up to its last notch so that youngsters on the porch wouldn’t miss a word,” so that the reader can visualize how closely packed the store was. African Americans from far away distances had even arrived in order to watch the fight (107). Their willingness to disregard personal space and distance shows the importance of the Brown Bomber’s fight to the
There are parades in the big cities, like New York, and of course Macy’s makes a sale out of it. There is much controversy with this holiday, not only in the United States, but also in other countries that

A relationship between a father and a son is a sacred bond, one created at birth and strengthened over time. This paternal relationship is core to the value of family, a likewise bond of faith and trust. Such bonds are tested during times of hardship and pain, seen most clearly during times of war. During the events of World War II, and the gruesome events of the Holocaust, this truth was never more true. Through works such as the memoir Night, by survivor Elie Wiesel, and the artistry of the 1997 film Life is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, these times of hardships are kept alive in common memory.

In his essay Bakhtin provides an analysis of the relationship between individual utterances and the ideologically charged forces that affect them, he writes: “The dialogic interaction of a word among other words (of all kinds and degrees of otherness) creates new and significant artistic potential in discourse, creates the potential for a distinctive art of prose, which has found its fullest and deepest expression in the novel.” (275) i.e. there are dialogic relations between the narrator and the writer, the author and the character, the story and other stories, culture and text and society and text. A novel is in fact characterized by heteroglossiawhere many voices (writer, character, society) are mixed which gives originality to the text.
