The theme in William Golding’s Novel Lord of the Flies is to portray the image of this inner evil that lives inside of everyone. When comparing the novel to the film we can see this theme weakened in many ways. Instead of English choir boys like the novel the director replaces these choir boys with American cadets in the film. There is also the image of the ‘beast’ which is portrayed very differently than in the novel, and causes confusion on what the actual ‘beast’ is. The film is also not able to give us the in depth character analysis that we see in the book, and can make it hard to understand the role of each character, and there purpose in the story. Finally the film did not present all the meaningful events that the book did, one of these very important events included the destroying of the conch which was not even shown in the film version. William Golding’s use of the English choir boys in the novel gives their characters a feeling of purity and religion to begin with. We are able to see this inner evil in the boys come out, as they start committing sins, like murder. We get a feel that maybe these choir boys aren’t so pure after all. The conch shell was a very important and powerful symbol as it was used to bring everyone together at the beginning and represents civilization and order in the novel. It isn’t until when Piggy is killed that the conch shell is destroyed. We as the reader are able to see the falling out of this civilization and the inner evil in the boys come out. Without this scene in the movie you don’t really feel that same destruction as you do in the book, because the conch was the thing that brought everyone together and without it there was nothing that the boys had that kept them together as
