1. Introduction 1.1Task as given In this project a task has been given to design a bicycle that can be ridden by four people simultaneously, meeting all the given requirements and constraints. The bicycle must take into account all the internal and external forces and the physics behind every decision made. 1.2. Task as understood. Using previously designed bicycles, account was taken as to what structures was used to accommodate all the riders and goods to be carried and to withstand the maximum weight of both the people and goods for deformation not to occur and in order for it to be ridden by one person without the need to modify the structure. A research will be done on the steering mechanism, tires and gearing …show more content…

Types of bicycles. 2.1.1. The cycle car 4W4P or the Rhoades car. This kind of bicycles has four wheels, two in the front and two at the back. The wheels used are of the same size although the 20 inches are mostly used. In this bicycle people in the front are the ones that pedal independently of each other. This bicycle uses a gearing system called the free wheel gear system. The frame of this bicycle is made up of steel and has a width of 55 inches, it weighs 97 kilograms and having the maximum load capacity of 318 kilograms. The braking system used is the single mechanical disc. The bicycle has a maximum speed of 6.7- 8.0 m/s. ⦁ Quattro cycle This kind of bicycle has four seats and four wheels. All the people are able to pedal independently of the each other. The width of the bicycle is 1.32 m, weighing 114 kilograms and having a load capacity of 475 kilograms. The Quattro cycle has a maximum speed of 6.9 m/s. Only one person has the steering and the brakes. The steering mechanism used in this bicycle is the two hand bars. It is a free wheel gearing mechanism …show more content…

This bicycle is made up of aluminium and this makes it very light weighing a total of 41 kilograms and supporting a maximum load of 408 kilograms. It has four 7 7 speed hub gears, and it can also be reversed. The four wheel hydraulic disc brakes are mated on the mag of the wheels. This bicycle is made up of the 20 inch wheels. The gearing system used in this bicycle is the fixed wheel system and it can be reversed backwards when in gear one. 2. 2.2 Type of gearing systems. In the bicycles above there were two types of gearing systems which are as follows. ⦁ free wheel This type of gearing system allows the rider to have greater speed and can be able to change gears shifting from one gear to the other. Allows the rider to climb slopes in a high speed and exerting a small force. ⦁ Fixed gear or fixed wheel system. This kind of gearing system helps the rider to climb slopes at a high speed but the rider has to exert more force. This type of gear allows the rider to reverse the bicycle backwards. ⦁ Types of materials used to make
