Hackman and Oldham Job characteristic model
The job characteristics model, designed by Hackman and Oldham, is based on the idea that the task itself is key to employee motivation. Specifically, a boring and monotonous job stifles motivation to perform well, whereas a challenging job enhances motivation. Variety, autonomy and decision authority are three ways of adding challenge to a job. Job enrichment and job rotation are the two ways of adding variety and challenge. an instructor who is required to follow a predetermined textbook, covering a given list of topics using a specified list of classroom activities, has low autonomy. On the other hand, an instructor who is free to choose the textbook, design the course content, and use any relevant materials when delivering lectures has higher levels of autonomy. Autonomy increases motivation at work, but it also has other benefits. Eg. . A salesperson who gives presentations to potential clients but is not informed of the clients’ decisions, has low feedback at work. If this person receives notification that a sale was made based on the presentation, feedback will be high.
Job characteristic model states that there are five core job characteristics (skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback) which impact three critical psychological states (experienced meaningfulness, experienced responsibility for outcomes, and knowledge of the actual results), in turn influencing work outcomes (job satisfaction, absenteeism, work motivation, etc.).
The five core job characteristics can be combined to form a motivating potential score (MPS) for a job, which can be used as an index of how likely a job is to affect an employee 's attitudes and behaviours. The three careers I chose to examine were IT Security Administrator, Forensics Investigator, and Obstetrician Gynecologist. I chose these careers because I discovered that the employment rates for these jobs are expected to grow at a faster than average 37% from 2012-2022. This is because data security threats are growing and with more digital technology rising, more organizations have become victims of cyber crimes. The other career is what I want to be. Internet Security Administrators, also known as computer security specialists, or Internet security specialists, protect computer systems against attack.
In future years the work we know and do will be changed. With current emerging technologies, such as the 3D printer, Wi-Fi, or mobile devices, jobs have already been impacted from what was done in the ‘olden days’ or before the introduction of these advancements. Three careers have been chosen to display how this information technology (IT) impacts on work, these careers being medicine, education, and journalism. They have been chosen based on how their careers have largely been positively impacted and changed because of these advancements. The examples below will demonstrate how IT has shown to be an overall positive addition to the work industry.

Workplace Literacy To begin, I would like to explain my background involving the English language because my background is probably very different from others. My background in learning English is not typical, meaning I did not have in-depth studies in the English language. I was born and raised in Cairo Egypt. Throughout my school years, my involvement with the English language was limited. I mostly studied compositions, dictation, poetry and novels.
The life of a 19th-century industrial worker was far from easy. Even in good times wages were low, hours long, and working conditions hazardous. Trying to fix the issue, many Europeans suggested much needed solutions to this problem. Over the course of the 19th century Europeans suggested that there should be equality between men women and social classes, that there should be a peaceful reorganization of social classes, and a revolution or a change in government. During the Industrial Revolution, as more factories were being built, more people were willing to do work as long as they got paid.
Occupational performance is affected by occupational dynamics. Occupational dynamics are the changes that happen to the occupational form during the occupation and the changes that happen to my development structure during the occupation (Nelson, 1988: 637). The impact of my occupation is that ingredients have changed into a cake. My equipment is not very affected but will need to be cleaned. I have worked on my buttercream piping skills and will be able to pipe more easily the next time I bake a cake.
Short staffing is one of the many challenges nurses encounter in the work environment. The impacts can be detrimental primarily to the patient’s outcome. To examine the effects of short staffing, research was conducted on 36,539 hospital inpatients to evaluate the amount of those exposed to an understaffed shift and how many patient outcomes resulted in a NSO (Twigg, Gelder, & Myers, 2015). NSO’s are nurse sensitive outcomes based on the nursing care provided to the patient. Patients exposed to short staffing had an increase of greater than one chance of NSO’s compared to patients not exposed (Twigg et al., 2015).
This means that within each classroom, the various roles that teachers serve are now entrusted to the student. Students control the flow of transitions, answering the intercom calls, greeting visitors, passing out papers, and ensuring that their classmates are on task. The theory was created in 1976 and Hackman and Oldham (1980) revised this theory again in 1980. In 1997, Faturochman defined job characteristic theory as the relationship between job characteristics and individual responses to work. The theory identifies specific task conditions where individuals are assumed to prosper in their work. Essentially, job characteristics can predict job satisfaction. SDT is in agreement with this theory that it promotes autonomous motivation.
INTRODUCTION Adapted from the course module notes, there are two categories of theories and techniques in job design to motivate employees: 1. Content theories by Maslow, McClelland, Herzberg and Alderfer. 2. Process theories such as Job Rotation, Job Enlargement and Enrichment; Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, The Hackman and Oldham Model and Empowerment.
Employee Empowerment Employee empowerment involves the workforce being provided with a greater degree of flexibility and more freedom to make decisions relating to work. Individuals are allowed to take personal responsibility for improving the way they do their jobs and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals. The four dimensions of empowerment in accordance to Spreitzer’s (1995) study are defined as follows: i. Meaning: The value one places on the importance on a given job, based on the individual’s own standards and ideals (Thomas and Velthouse, 1990) ii. Competence: The ability or capability of the individual to perform tasks or responsibilities assigned.
The results of the PAQ allows one to view specific details about the job, as well as the ability to compare jobs or positions in different businesses. Additional details regarding the elements and six main categories, along with the use of the PAQ in a research study, will be further discussed. Riggio (2013) effectively discusses and describes the job elements that the PAQ analyzes. The elements are grouped into six main categories and are described in brief detail. The categories include the following: information input, mental processes, work output, relationships with other persons, job context, and other job characteristics.
