Imagine that you wake up every day knowing that the person you love died in war. That is what it is like to be Mrs. Bigio from The Wednesday Wars. In Gary Schmidt’s novel The Wednesday Wars. Mrs. Bigio starts the book as a rude and racist character. But throughout the book, Mrs. Bigio becomes nice and trustable. At the beginning of the book Mrs. Bigio starts off rude and racist. In this scene, Mai Thi is in the lunch line going up to get food and Mrs. Bigio says this. “Pick it up and be glad you're getting it. You shouldn’t even be here, sitting like a queen in a refuge home while American boys are sitting in swamps on Christmas Day. They’re the ones who should be here. Not you.”“pg.95” Here shows how she was being rude and racist towards Mai Thi. And also right before this while Holling, Danny, and Meryl Lee were getting lunch and she kept being rude and teasing them sort of. Another time before this was when Holling was going to get the cream puffs and she kept being rude. This is that Mrs. Bigio says, “Now would be a good time to start.” This is not as bad as what she …show more content…

Because she helped them out when they were panicking. Later on the same page everyone is hungry and Mrs. Bigio says she will coock something and this happens. “Mai Thi stared at it all. “Thit bo kho?” she asked. “It will be by the time we’re done,” said Mrs. Bigio. “The curry and gingerroot are in the front pocket there. I couldn’t find any lemongrass,so we’ll have to make do.” Here she is shown making a Viatnamese dish for Mai Thi. then right after she says that she wants to either foster or adopt Mai Thi. This shows that she has grown and realized her mistakes and is trying to fix
Josie Cormier from the novel Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult was guilty of killing her boyfriend, Matt Royston. She confessed to it when she went to court for Peter’s trial. She hadn’t told anyone about what she did for five months. Only one other person knew, because he watched her kill Matt and told her he wouldn’t tell anyone: Peter. Matt had been an abusive boyfriend, both mentally and physically.
In Legend by Marie Lu flashbacks to add insight on Day. At this point in the story Day is going to bed, a few days before he is supposed to be killed. He is dreaming about events that have happened to him in the past. In one of his dreams he recalls the events when he hit a policeman on accident with a ball. Police man over reacted and beat him brutally.
heard a metallic click, and I froze.”” (Butler,36) Dana also shows the same feelings in her second visit as well. While she’s hiding in the bushes, she experienced the white men whipped a black man. As she quotes, The white men, “hustled the man to a tree so close to me that I lay flat on the ground, stiff with fear. With just a little bad luck, one of the whites could spot me, or, in the darkness, fail to spot me and to step on me.
Title The book love is a Revolution tells the story of Nala, a young, black, and plus-sized girl, exploring love through a romantic relationship while learning to love herself. Nala Robinson is a plus-sized black girl living in New york. Her character shows lots of traits of impulsiveness and one of the best quotes I think shows this is “Oh you're a vegetarian Tye asks, I give a slow yes that's a lie” Page 26.
Betrayal and revenge can be powerful motivators in a story. Legend by Marie Lu follows June Iparis and Daniel Wing, also known as Day, living in the Republic. The Republic forces children to take a test called a Trial when they reach a certain age, so while June scored perfectly, Day scored below average, forcing him to run away from his family to live as a criminal on the streets. When June’s brother is killed, everyone suspects Day as the culprit. The Republic sends June undercover to find and arrest Day for his crimes.
The theme of Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is, be yourself. Stargirl changed herself for others even though she wasn’t happy about it. Stargirl was changing herself just so others would want to be her friend, “What do you have to do to get somebody’s attention around here?”(139) My first quote is happy, “She roamed from goal post to goal post. She swirled like a dust devil” (22).
She doesn’t care what other people think of her. Meal scenes are very important tools in books, and they allow readers to get more insight on characters in
Melinda Sordino elucidates the many components of a mentally challenged character. Some of which are positive, such as her creative emotional ways of expressing herself, however, she undoubtedly highlights the negative torments of mental illness, like constant lack of enthusiasm, grave instability, and inability to love. For all of these reasons, I would not want to be friends with Melinda Sordino. Firstly, due to Melinda’s overwhelming struggle with depression, she consistently projects her absence of enthusiasm onto everyone around her. When Heather, Melinda’s incredibly optimistic and only friend, encourages Melinda to join a club with her, Melinda unkindly responds, “clubs are stupid” (23).
Abusive relationships often lead to regret in the long run. In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis”, brother takes Doodle for granted, he also takes advantage of Doodle, and he does not accept Doodle for the way he is. The lack of love brother has for Doodle leads him to substantial regret in the end. If you take your partner’s unique characteristics for granted you will later regret it.
Sykes’ reaction reveals the rarity of her confidence and independence. Specifically, his “amazement” was so strong that his mouth released his dinner and it portrayed Delia’s assertiveness and how unusual it was for her to make her own decisions and demands. Additionally, Sykes asked a question during another meal that implied he was not a financial burden to her, even though he spends excessive amounts of her earned money. Afterward, Hurston forms a detailed scene of a heated argument between the characters. Furiously, Delia “seized the iron skillet from the stove and struck a defensive pose…
In the book, Breakthrough, by Joyce Smith, the main protagonist, Joyce Smith is a very loyal character. The book starts when John, the main character, goes to a sleepover with his friends from his basketball team. When they woke up John saw Lake St. Louis is frozen and decides to go outside and walk on it. Shortly after, he and his friends broke through the ice and fell in. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Miss Caroline is treated poorly because some of her students think she is picking on a kid that comes from a poor family. It is the first day of first grade for Scout and Miss Caroline is her teacher. Miss Caroline's students do not realize that she is not trying to pick on a student named Walter when she tries to be nice by paying for his lunch but does not know that he would have to pay the money back. “You’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline. Walter hasn’t got a quarter at home to bring you”.(Lee 28)
In the beginning of the story Mrs. Bigio is unsympathetic to the kids in school, especially Mai Thi because she is still wrapped around her husband's unheroic death. Rather than try to understand where Mai Thi is coming from, she takes her anger out on her when she says, “Pick it up and be glad you're getting it. You shouldn't even be here, sitting like a queen in a refugee home while American boys are sitting in swamps on Christmas Day. They're the ones who should be here. Not you” (95).
In the story it says, “ ‘I know, I know. You’ve said that a hundred times,’ she snapped. ‘What did you say?’ He asked, pushing his newspaper aside.” Maria’s conflict connects to the theme of the story because she is being ungrateful towards her father and wants to grow up too fast.
