Muhammadiyah Movement (Persatuan Muhammadiyah Singapura): An Analysis
Abstract
Muhammadiyah movement made its debut in the post war period. The effort originated from three men who came to Singapore as migrants in search for employment. These men; Rijal Abdullah, Abdul Rahman Harun and Amir Esa came all the way from Sumatra and Riau islands, bringing along their reformist ideas. They conducted religious classes in different parts of Singapore using a method of teaching similar to those of the muhammadiyah and the Persatuan Islam (PERSIS) in Java, Indonesia despite little evidence showing these men’s affiliation to the well established Muhammadiyah movement in Indonesia.
The teachings were aimed to make others return to the true teachings of the prophet as well as adapting to modernity bearing in mind that these teachers believed that Muslims in Singapore had subscribed to an erroneous interpretation of the faith. Muhammadiyah movement envisions the future of Muslims living in a progressive and pluralistic society hence exhorts the need for reforms in religious thinking. He was a very charismatic person an powerful speaker who conveyed Elijah Muhammad teachings to the masses and was appointed national spokesmen. During that period membership was around 500 but skyrocketed to 30,000.
Of the eleven options to read or watch for the paper, I chose to read, the Autobiography of Malcolm X, and Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The first choice, Autobiography of Malcolm X, was my first choice because it was a book that was a topic in high school history classes and I wanted to gain a better understanding of the book and actually read the book in its entirety. Siddhartha was also a topic when learning the Indian culture and religion in high school history classes so when this was an option given to read, I took advantage of that and read this to concentrate for the assignment. They were named black Muslims and leader 's name was Elijah Muhammad. Black Muslims and mainstream Muslims do not believe in the same things, Malcolm x real name is Malcolm little, but after he joined the nation of Islam he changed it for the x symbolizing his ancestors who was enslaved .The black Muslims were self-sufficient as possible. Malcolm x was a open voice and very well known in the black community along with martin luther king jr. Malcolm became a persuasive leader of the Nation of Islam. After Malcolm X's death in 1965, his book The Autobiography of Malcolm X promoted his thoughts, especially among black youth, and established the framework for the Black Power development of the late 1970s. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. His mom, Louise Norton Little, was a homemaker involved with the family's eight youngsters.
While in prison Malcolm spent a majority of his time reading and becoming knowledged in law and other “forensic skills” (Epps). During this time he is frequently visited by his siblings, who had recently converted to the religion of Islam, his brother Reginald was part of the Nation of Islam (NOI)(“Biography”). NOI was a select group of black Muslims who believe in black pride and that to get equality and freedom they must establish their own state, completely separate from the white Americans. While in Prison Malcolm converts to the religion of Islam and joins NOI and shortly before his early release (A & E) changes his last name to X believing that his surname Little was his “slave” name (History.comStaff).
MALCOLM X Before there was the political leader known as Malcolm X, there was Malcolm Little, a small time crook with no direction. That was until January of 1946 when he was arrested for burglary and later charged with larceny and breaking and entering, which carried a hefty sentence. It was during his incarceration that Little was introduced to the Nation of Islam and he slowly began changing his ways and eventually his name to Malcolm X. In the years following his release, X rose up the ranks of the NOI and became a prominent minister and civil rights activist.
In June 1934, the leader at the time Fard disappeared. The movement was now led by Elijah Muhammad. He established places of worship, which was called Temples of Mosques. Additionally, he established farms, estate holdings in the US and abroad and a school named Muhammed University of Islam.
When World War 2 was over, the Civil Rights Movement had began shortly after. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were two well known political leaders and activists during the Civil Rights Movement. King was a very powerful spokesperson, leader, and an African American Baptist Minister. His focus was to gain civil and equal rights for African Americans by using nonviolent strategies. X was a Muslim Human Rights Activists.
Factors that Contributed to the Rapid Spread of Islam Islam was created in Saudi Arabia around the year 622 by the prophet Muhammad. The religion spread very rapidly. Many territories in the Middle East were under Muslim control by the year 750 — around 128 years after the religion 's creation. Islam is one of the major religions in the world today.
Groups such as the “The Modern Utopian” tried to annex themselves from society due to their dissatisfaction with the current norms. As birth control pills were produced these individuals tried to obtain a “higher-level” of understanding by undergoing sexual actions. With such as radical way of addresses specific social issues the “Modern Utopian” didn’t stick with the public. The media portrayed them as animals and organization eventually fell apart.

A. PREAMBLE The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 has sparked intense curiosity and interest in the world especially the West to learn and investigate the religion of Islam. The Muslim people are portrayed as violent and barbaric, and Islam as oppressive and antithesis to human rights values. Thus, escalation of public opinion about Islam has encouraged debates and forums, and also stirred demonstrations and movements which have compelled the Muslims to speak out their minds and interpret and recast their texts viz. Quran and Sunnah of prophet Mohammad and even question and challenge the prevailing culture and practices, and domineering structures.
Indonesia went through crucial events in the last few centuries including the spread of Islamic faith and influence. The spreading started out from trades that happened between Indonesians and Arabians (Sousa). Religious laws and traditions have changed from the moment Islam spread in Indonesia. Architectural style and mandatory rules also changed. Islam also had an impact on Indonesia economically, such as on banking and financial products (Rama).
Mansa Musa was a Medieval African emperor who ruled over Mali from 1312-1337. He is most well-known for his pilgrimage to Mecca that happened in 1324. He was the first Muslim African ruler to make the pilgrimage. Mansa Musa doesn’t have a lot of information on his childhood. I do know that he was born into the Keita Dynasty and his parents were Fage and Laye.
