In the books Firebreak and The Fifth Season there are two characters that have obtained multifaceted characteristics in order to survive and fit into their dangerous worlds. Both Damaya from The Fifth Season, and 06, from Firebreak, have to make hard decisions. These decisions derive from their circumstances of being powerful forces in a powerless man's world. Their powers and capabilities have been controlled and limited due to their upbringing, however, they use their powers in ways that stray from what they have been taught in order to follow what they believe is right. 06 was a hero in the eyes of the citizens that were being exploited by Greenleaf and Stellaxis. One example of heroism is shown in the book when it states, “No rest for the wicked,’ 06 says, levering herself up. “Okay, everybody on your feet. We’ll have a roof over your heads by sundown, but you have to do exactly as we say’”(Firebreak pg 154). In the Fifth Season it states, “‘You don't like Misalem is the villain of the tale. That you are like Misalem: a potential threat, without a Shemshena to control you.’ He says this matter-of-factly, not as a question… ‘I don’t want to be a threat,’ she says in a small voice…‘But the plain fact of the matter, Damya, is that you cannot control yourself. It isn’t in your nature. You are lightning, dangerous unless captured in wires” (pg 94-95). This displays to Damaya how dangerous she can be and how powerful she is even at such a young age. The 5th Wave, written by Rick Yancy, follows the perspectives of many different characters going through five waves of an alien invasion. Cassie, a sixteen year old girl, struggles to survive alone after her parents died and her brother got taken away. She and many other characters struggle through a harsh change in their lives, and yet still find ways to protect the ones they love and stay loyal to each other. A theme the book proposes is that people can change for the worst, but their hearts will remain pure. Cassie is one of the main characters in the book.

This fear is one of the reasons the girls stay. An example of this is when a girl attempts to run away and they recapture her and shave her hair. They also spit at her and throw gravel at her (McCormick 84-85). Lakshami sees this and this creates a fear in her that says if she tries to escape this will happen to her. However Lakshmi becomes brave and attempts to escape but is recaptured and her hair is shaved (McCormick 107).
Soldiers who fought in wars throughout the years are viewed as heroes in their countries eyes. Nobody actually knows what the soldiers have to go through mentally and physically. Nobody knows about the traumatic experiences and different emotions these young and women had to go through. In the story "The Outsiders" by S.E Hinton, there was two gangs of boys, the Greaser's and the Soc's. The Soc's were perfect little rich boys who lived on the West Side, the Greaser were known as poor rebellious boys who were only looking for fun in trouble. Johnny and Ponyboy were Greasers, the boys were roped into an unsettling fight, where Johnny was protecting himself and Pony. While protecting himself he killed a Soc' name Bob in self defence.
