Multilingualism is part of our society and the knowledge of many languages is not only an open window to other people but also an opportunity to get to know other cultures. As it is possible to travel around the world, communication and language knowledge are getting more and more important. Even at home, people are getting in contact with many different languages trough television. Brussels, capital of Europe, is the centre of many different nationalities, a multilingual world where everyone evolves in a different way from young to retired people.

This is a questionnaire with more general questions on retired people activities. This allows me to know better how retired people organize their daily life and which activity take them more time. The questionnaires are available in French but also in Dutch. It allows me to compare if the French or Dutch origins have an impact on the way retired people live and see life.
The third questionnaire is for retired people from 60 to 75+ who are studying a foreign language. This is the most important questionnaire, the basis of my thesis: retired people learning languages and the place it takes in their daily activities. I compared it with the questionnaire above and have already been able to notice that retired people who are studying languages are doing more activities and enjoying more their retirement than retired people that do not study any language. For my Life-Span interview project, I decided to interview someone who was in the late adulthood period of their life. The interview was conducted in the interviewee 's home, on November 12th, 2015. The woman I choose to interview was known to me, and she is currently 76 years of age, a grandmother with four children and seven grandchildren. We sat down and chatted for about an hour and a half. I started the interview by making small talk and then moved into the interview questions.

Aging is another stage in the human life. It is synonymous to other life stages like childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The process of aging affects all people differently and is highly dependent on genes (hereditary), attitudes and lifestyle (CPA, 2009).
The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. Moreover, 28 or 56% of the elderlies shared that they often think and wish that they are in other people’s condition while half of them (50%) think and feel that they are useless. The process of aging in not an unfamiliar topic to society and is an inevitable phase of life. Since 2011, the number of older individuals are increasing annually particularly those from the baby boomer generation. The life expectancy has been increasing with people living longer thanks to modern medicine. These occurrences are proof that civilization is growing exponentially, however the process of aging also means that the older individuals are facing dilemmas such as decreased physical functions, financial instability from retirement, and abuse. Even older adults who are independent may face some limitations.

When it comes to learning a second language, the younger you start the easier you will begin to learn your second language. Younger brains learn much easier than older brains because the brain is designed for language learning to take place between birth and adolescence (the period following the onset of puberty during which a young person develops from a child into an adult).
Research Questions From the literature review, it was established that there were several factors affecting language learning and acquisition. More specifically, it was revealed that factors such as exposure at an early age, motivation, attitudes, incentives and educational system can influence language acquisition. However, most of the research were conducted in the west and were focused on students as subjects to the study and foreigners working in the country where they need to learn the language to lengthen their range of employment opportunity.
It is encouraged for students to learn foreign languages as it has numerous benefits. Most countries have introduced foreign language starting from the early age. Today, the high school graduates are required to study foreign language in schools as it becomes a requirement for them to graduate from certain college with minimum of two years of learning foreign languages. Hence, the students are encouraged to learn on other language. Basically, foreign language is a native to another country and it is also a language which is not spoken in the native country of the person referred to.
