Let’s be honest here most of us believe that we are great at multitasking, but the reality of the truth is that most of us are not even close to being decent at doing it. Now let’s say that we multitask and drive, that puts us at a bigger risk and most of us seem to be ignoring it like it’s not a problem. Nevertheless research clearly shows that nothing positive can come from us multitasking and driving. So what is multitasking? Multitasking is when a person tries to do more than one task at the same time. Marc E. Weksler, from Geriatric Medicine and Babette B. Weksler, from the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical Center, state that people who multitask lower the quality on how they perform a task (386). So when a person is multitasking and driving the chances of them …show more content…
Matt Richtel, author of “Windshield Devices Bring Distracted Driving Debate to Eye Level.” talks about a new device named Navdy that keeps us from removing our hands from the wheel so we won’t be so distracted, while still being able to see our social media updates. We can do voice commands the device and it will read to us our text messages we have received. On the surface this all sounds like it would solve many problems while multitasking and driving (par. 3, 4). However Marc E. Weksler and Babette B. Weksler explain that “Neurophysiologic correlates of distracting second tasks during simulated driving have shown by MRI that a driver listening to someone speak suffers a 37% loss in parietal lobe activation associated with significant deterioration in driving accuracy, even when a phone is not being used or dialed”(386). So even though advanced technology is being created to try and make multitasking and driving easier people still can’t use it to their advantage because any other task being done other than driving still puts us at a huge risk of
In this article, Teddi discusses some ways by which one can be distracted while on the road and how to manage those distractions. He also emphasized on how prevalence distracted driving is among teens. This article is useful to my project on distracted driving because Teddi’s data shows that distractions while driving can actually be managed. Clerkin, Bridget. "
The four facts that I thought were important from the Multitasking – Myth video, one being that multitasking is very risking and dangerous when behind the wheel of a car. It is risky and dangerous, because your focus is on more than one thing. You can become easily distracted and as a result could cause an accident. The second fact I thought to be important was, the amount of revenue it is costing American businesses a year as a result of trying to multitasking at work and on the go. I believe 650 billion dollars a year is a lot of money and in the long run can only hurt these companies.
Defining Distracted Driving Anyone handling an 18-wheeler that is text messaging is twenty-three times more likely to get in an accident. In the simple act of dialing a cellphone, a truck driver is six times more likely to cause an accident. Distracted driving is not just limited to texting and talking on a cellphone.
Using a cell phone while driving is dangerous and could be deadly. 1. The severity of distracted driving can range from a totaled car to devastating injuries or fatalities. Most drivers do not realize they are not only putting themselves in danger when they drive distracted. They are also endangering those around them as well.
Anyone who drives would more than likely admit to being distracted while driving. Many forms of distraction exist while driving. The most common forms include texting while driving, focusing the mind on something else, and talking with others in the car. The distractions people take part in create many serious problems like death. People do not realize that the smallest distractions can result in a life changing event.
Some states have now made it illegal to drive while using hand-held cell phones. By doing so it allows the driver to become more engaged into his or her driving. I see driving as a way to free yourself and not a way to be tied down to electronics or social media. It is proven that people who drive while using a hand-held device have a higher chance of getting into an accident. Making the use of hand-held devices illegal provides a safer experience for all types of drivers, it allows drivers to be more engaged, and it allows the driver to be alert to on going changes.
Verna von Pfetten acknowledges in the article “Read This Story Without Distraction (Can You?),” that monotasking has its benefits although the environment has more to do with focusing than one might think. Everyone knows “multitasking” doesn’t actually exist. The brain cannot multitask. Instead, it switches from one task to another, meeting the demands of only one at a time. There is a cost associated with this switch, resulting in brain power being eaten away causing productivity to slip.
Also, “It found that people talking on hands-free devices drive at faster speeds than those using hand-held device possibly because the hands-free device provides a false sense of security, resulting in a greater incidence of car accidents” ("The Evidence on Hands-free Cell Phone Devices While Driving”).This study that was found shows that people who use hands free technology drive at a faster speed than people who use handheld technology. Therefore this study by researchers at The University of Utah helps to prove that drivers who use hands free devices are more likely to cause car accidents. Hands free technology is just as distracting or even more distracting than the use of regular technology. In fact, “More than 30 studies show hands-free devices are no safer than handheld as the brain remains distracted by the cell phone conversation” “The problem is the brain does not truly multi-task. Just like you can’t read a book and talk on the phone, you can’t safely operate a vehicle and talk on the phone” ("Why Hands-Free Cell Phones Are Not Safer: Safety Council.").
According to Inkteen.com “In 2009, 5,474 lives were taken and 448,000 people got injured from car accidents from being distracted while driving, says the government.” Being able to drive may be a dream comes true, but it could easily turns into a nightmare that is never woken up from. The use of technology has grown in constant for many years, distracting people from things that are important. Texting and driving is one of the biggest problems in USA. However, not only are drivers putting themselves in danger, they’re putting passengers in their car and other drivers on the road in danger, too.
III. Purpose Statement – Texting while driving is a serious distraction and one that could cost you your life or the lives of others. IV. Main Points (TRANSITION:
Multitasking is the ability to be able to have your attention on multiple things at one time. Everyone multitasks whether it is at work, home, or school. Since everyone multitasks one way or another it just depends on what category you fall in. When multitasking you need to know the limits and when it is not effective. If I was only able to do one thing at a time I would never be able to get anything done throughout my day.
In her article, “The Myth of Multitasking”, Christine Rosen looks for answers for the truth of multitasking. She discusses the effects multitasking has in the modern day society and then states that having a multitasking lifestyle can have setbacks. Rosen supports her claim by having strong references in her article to prove that multitasking is dangerous all around. Rosen goes into detail on how it becomes a challenge to stay focused on one thing at a time. Rosen then ends her article by directly stating the problem of multitasking and now in today’s time, it is a true struggle to just pay attention to one thing for a long period of time.
Scientist David Sanbonmatsu stated "The researchers found that people who thought they were good at multi-tasking were actually the worst at it." Multitasking is a very common thing used in everyday life, from work to even walking on the side walk while using your phone. One study from the University of Sussex in the UK indicates that forms of multitasking can cause cognitive damage. MRI scans showed that those who consumed multiple
Multitasking is used in everyday life, people use multitasking without even knowing it. The fact of the matter is that multitasking has both advantages and disadvantages. In the essay “The Myth of Multitasking” by Christine Rosen, Rosen is able to reference various doctors, specialists and psychologists to support her claim that multitasking is dangerous not only while driving and working, but also for people's overall well-being. Which I agree with, the human mind should only focus on single though at time. Multitasking requires that we focus on multiple unrelated thoughts at the same time.
Let’s take a look at multitasking and why there is so much talk about why people should or should not multitask. In today‘s world of technology, there is no escaping one of the most talked about processes that the average working person does on a regular bases; multitasking. There have been numerous studies and views on whether
