Solid waste management is an emerging issue as the world’s municipalities become increasingly affected by the huge generation of waste. According to the UNEP (2010), Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated worldwide an estimated 1.7 – 1.9 billion metric tons of waste. Increasing population, booming economies, rapid urbanization and the rise in the community living standards have all greatly accelerated solid waste generation rate in developing countries at the municipal level (Minghua et al, 2009). According to ISWA and UNEP, (2002) “with … limited resources, only basic technologies for treatment and disposal, and deficient enforcement of relevant regulations, serious problems remain for municipal solid waste management of developing countries” (cited in Chen at el, 2010:716). To the United Nations (UN), rapid urban growth throughout the developing world has seriously outstripped the capacity of most cities to provide adequate services to their citizens. The institutional capacity of developing countries at the municipal level is lagging in relation to waste generation trends. As a result, cities of developing countries are environmentally polluted and public health is under threat from widespread waste …show more content…
Bangladesh is no exception. It is widely recognized that solid waste management is not only a technical problem. It is strongly influenced by political, legal, socio-cultural, environmental and economic factors as well as availability of resources. These factors are interrelated in waste management systems. What separates a productive team and one that is not is that, the productive team is able to make clear decisions and are confident that every one of their members are in favour of that decision. It is common for people to have the mindset to not be committed to something when they know their opinions and thoughts are neglected and excluded from the discussion. Having commitment in a team is more about making sure that every members’ opinions are heard and acknowledged rather than just having everybody’s consensus.

Chapter 2 Literature Review 2.1 Waste management in developing countries: The Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Cities and towns in developing countries have for several decades been faced with a challenge of handling and managing solid waste adequately. The main reasons associated with these challenges have been mentioned as rapid urbanisation and growing populations in towns and cities which consequently led to increased generation of waste (Guerrero et al, 2013). The management of this solid waste by municipalities grew as a budget burden for each municipality due to the associated high management costs, lack of understanding of the diverse factors that affect waste management at different stages and the linkages that
Introduction People tend to consume a lot, when there is consumption, there is waste – and that waste becomes a big problem that needs taken care of, which costs a lot of time, space and resources. If not managed, in turn, the world that we live in will become a hazardous place for all living things. According to the World Bank, people throughout the world, “spend $2.3 trillion a year on food and beverages alone” (Global Consumption Database, 2018), that is quite a lot.
