In 2009, during Obama’s presidency, Common Core was introduced to the public. According to the Common Core State Standards Initiative, Common Core is “a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA)” created “to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.” However, the controversy on Common Core arose as many opponents such as Diane Ravitch found faults in the Common Core standards in the design of the standard and its inability to perform what it is designed to do and the purpose of ststandardized testing. Will the students benefit from these standards or will these standards
Have you ever wondered whether a writer’s voice and the standard rules of academic writing can exist on the same page? According to Dr. Debra Pena, English Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and Mathew Teorey, English Professor at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and the author of "Using Freshman Composition to Analyze What Students Really Know about Grammar", a writer’s voice and the process of academic writing can exist on the same page (Personal Communications February 13, 2017, Teorey 2). However, my first essay in Freshman Composition II was a Classical Argument on “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Is it the New Death Sentence for Future Athletes Playing Sports in America?”, I sacrificed my
Every year Austin Peay State University decides to produce two musicals and two straight plays for their theatre season. This year one of the musicals selected was Anything Goes by Cole Porter. Anything Goes concentrates on the story of Hope Harcourt and her family trying to sail from New York to England. With the production being a musical a lot more work was put towards additional skills like voice techniques and choreography, rather than in a straight play where the task is to just memorize your lines and create a connection with your character. The overall performance is based on how well the extra work such as, voice techniques and choreography complement the acting and set pieces.
Into the Woods is a broadway musical that was first performed on December 4, 1986 with music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. I 've performed in dozens of musicals, but this one is by far my favorite. The story line intertwines fairytales, and shows how they helped and fought each other in gruesome conditions. The main family in this show is the baker and his wife who must locate items from different fairytales in order to lift a curse placed on them by a witch. The curse has prevented the family from bearing any children, but they prevail in their quest and the baker 's wife has her baby in the second act. "Children Will Listen" is a song sung by the witch to the baker after her daughter, Rapunzel, was killed by a giant. Not only is
Albert Einstein, President Harry Truman, and Neil Armstrong all have something in common. They all played a musical instrument and were successful in their careers. Coincidence? I think not. Playing a musical instrument makes you more successful in your career.
According to Daniel Levitin, a cognitive psychologist and neurologist, humans can recognize songs in any pitch (“Interview”). This means if “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is played with a different set of notes; humans would still recognize the song. If songs with only the same rhythm are so recognizable, does this mean music is more important to humans than believed? Music is built into the human mind and music has multiple physical and cognitive effects.
What I feel I did well on this argumentative essay was my research. I had many sources that provided me with facts and statistics and they helped me to decide what side I was on. There were many sources that I did not use but that I had read through. What I struggled with was commentary. I feel that the commentary in my argumentative essay was not very strong. I am able to use discussion and debate in the future to explore/research a topic by choosing a topic and then doing research on both sides so that I can could a side to align with. Some important factors to consider while researchin are: website credibility,
As a teenager, I see that my peers are completely diverse when it comes to a music style. Everyone has their own mix of artists and songs that may or may not be completely similar. I sat on the edge of a pool table as I watched my best friend 's attempt of having an open DJ station at her party. She wanted everyone to be able to listen to what they wanted. The idea was not bad and neither were her intentions. With her ability to be friends with people in different friend groups, she should have thought about this being a problem. I heard a wide variety of music from rap, death metal, and many boy bands. As the night went on there were fights, arguments and a decrease in guests. Looking around the room it came to my attention that all of these people do like music; not one of them suggested that it should be an awkward silence. I started to think about how much of an impact music has on individuals and social groups, or whether it has one at all. I went home and began to view how music affects me and my peers.
Roger’s and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is arguably one of the most well known films that many can admit to watching at least once in their lifetime. People all around the world have found this musical inspiring, as it documents growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. This incredibly well written film is based on the story of the Von Trapp family who escaped Austria when the Nazis invaded it during the war. Part of what made this movie so interesting on so many different accounts was the music that accompanied the vivid and exciting scenes. Without music, many could agree that our world would be a sad, quiet, dull and depressing place. In John Harrington Edward’s book God and Music, he states, “In simplest definition,
In 1988, students at Gallaudet University shut down the campus in protest, with one clear goal in mind: Deaf President Now. The school board had just selected their newest president- the seventh hearing president for a school almost entirely made up of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students- and the people were pissed. Out of three candidates, the two Deaf men under consideration had been snubbed for yet another president who didn’t come from the culture the university represented, and even worse, didn’t use their language.
During the mid 1800s, the pro-slavery argument was at its strongest. The Proslavery Argument by Boundless, an online textbook, discusses the famous Mudsill Speech of James Henry Hammond which stated that the pro-slavery political argument, an ideology that defended a class-sensitive view of American antebellum society. He believed that many past societies carried the burden of the existence of a class of landless poor. Continually, other southern pro-slavery theorists felt that this class of landless poor was “inherently transient and easily manipulated, and as such often destabilized society as a whole” (Boundless). Thus, the greatest threat to democracy was seen as coming from “class warfare that destabilized a nation's economy, society and
That was my only thought as I began my National History Day paper last year. It had to be perfect. This was the paper that would consume my life for months. It was the third paper I was writing for this competition: two papers were already behind me, 8 pages of writing with thousands of pages of research behind them. With the memory of these papers came the knowledge that I had twice been a national competitor; it was expected that I would move through the regional and state competitions with ease. Only I assumed otherwise.

It is extremely irritating when people do not recognize all the sports that are out there. Sure, there are a lot of them but if we can consider cheerleading a sport then I think that we can call marching band a sport. People do not understand why I am so easily annoyed when they diss this great sport.
Thesis Statement: Today I am going to tell you about an aspect of human culture that appears just about everywhere you go: music.
