Literature Review As defined by Hanley & Goolsby (2002) musical training refers to the training that contributes to recognize beats, notes, and tonic chords and the one that improves the auditory memory. As a result of this training, musicians could have multiple benefits in their auditory skills. For example, Merzenich, M., Nahum, M., & Van,T. (2013,) rewrite(as mentioned by Musacchia et al., 2007, 2008; Parberty-Clark et al., 2009b,2012a,b,c; Strait et al.,2009,2012,2013a,b) “Musicians have faster neutral responses (on the scale of tenths of milliseconds) to both musical and speech sounds”( p.214). As shown by these authors, musicians’ neutral responses are faster to speech sounds, so the benefits of musical training are not only limited …show more content…
& Kuhl, P. K. (2015). They focused on the effects of long-term musical experience on lexical tone categories. The authors of this research “first examine whether musicians’ perception of lexical tones is similar to non-musicians when neither group had prior experience with tonal languages” (p.1458). Similarly, research proposal will classify participants into musicians and non-musicians, but its goal has to do with the phonological discrimination of them, and not with lexical tone categories. Moreover, studies carried out by Alexander et al., 2005 and Gottfried, 2007(as cited in Cooper, A. & Wang, Y. 2012) stated that “musical experience can also be beneficial at a higher linguistic level, namely tone word identification, whereby listeners are not asked to simply identify individual phonemes, but to situate those phonemic contrasts at the word level in order to differentiate meaning” (p.4765). According to these authors, musical training can have positive effects on the identification and distinction of phonemes (sounds) in order to distinguish the meaning of words. However, this research proposal will not focus on the meaning of words, but solely on the discrimination of sounds because the participants could have no knowledge of English vocabulary. The importance of mentioning their work lies on the significant relationship they found between musical training and the contrast of sounds …show more content…
Due to that, each investigator has his/her own responsibilities which need to be completed during the week; thus, the development of the study will be limited to those hours in which the investigators can meet. Another important aspect that could limit our investigation is university professors because some of them could not allow their students to take the questionnaires or tests. Consequently, in order to apply the instruments, more time or many different workdays could be needed. As the professors, some university students feel some rejection towards collaborating on investigations. In fact, they could even feel attacked or confused when they are subjected to tests or questionnaires, especially if they are related to the English language. Finally, the necessary place and equipment the investigators will need could be a limitation as well. The place investigators will need in order to develop the auditory test must be quiet due to fact that the participants have to listen to some audios. Moreover, the developers will need technological equipment to play the audios and they could not work
Musicians are “great problem solvers in school and social situations” because they have a stronger corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects the two halves.(Berman) When an outsider joins band their minds are opened into a whole new world. This is because when a person is making music there is not only one place in the brain that is being activated. A musician is using parts of the brain that have to do with the visual, auditory, and motor functions of the brain. People who play a musical instrument are working multiple parts of their brain at once making it easier for them to remember information more.
Being a music educator, I find chapter four of “Healing at the Speed of Sound” to be very relatable and inspiring. The many benefits of the methods Carl Orff and Zoltán Kodály are explained in this section which is always a hot topic for music educators. The benefits of music also go further into the brain to help shape and regulate emotion. Finally, the troubles of audio processing disorders, a subject I know little about, are expressed. To begin, this book brings up a lot of interesting data and information on the methods of Carl Orff and Zoltán Kodály.
To be an active citizen in society, we must make a decision. This decision is to participate in society, or to shun it. Both have life altering consequences. If you choose to truly shun society, you would have to live in the wilderness somewhere and be completely self-sufficient. On the other hand, choosing to an active member of society, in America, means to pay your taxes, vote in elections, and have some type of community involvement.
Music, for many, is a form of communication that cannot otherwise be expressed through a simple word or gesture. In “The Myth of Music” by Rachel M. Harper, the speaker conveys the closeness and authority she feels over music in her life, specifically in terms of the relationship she has with her family, by using (metaphorical) diction and shift in tone, effectively relaying the shield she has put up to protect personal experiences through musical memories. Harper conveys the fact that everyone has been intertwined with music throughout their entire life whether they realize it or not. From the moment someone is born into the world, they are introduced to music. Music is not classified as just instruments and vocals, but rather it’s all around
In order to be supported during the weeks of data collection and analysis, the Spring Semester schedule needed to be arranged to include courses fitting the research project parameters. Family and friends are prepared to give emotional support and help with daily domestic duties. A critical colleague was chosen for
During my research I found an article called,“The Effects of Music on Student’s work” by Rudy Miller. Rudy Miller states “Soothing music or classical music can help a student focus.” The author also exclaimed that, “British studies claim that listening to Mozart for 10 minutes produced a “Mozart Effect” where test-takers I.Q scores went up 8 or 9 points.” The writer of the article also announced, “After the 30-day course, the average retention rate per student was 92%.” Miller argues that “listening to music is good for the brain.
Final Draft We all have stories and memories tied to songs that have become a part of who are. Remember the violins playing in the background while watching a sad movie or the song that helped you through difficult times or the song you and your friends sang while attending a concert? Whether it’s on the television, the radio, in a movie, in the car, or at a sporting event, music is everywhere. Feeling the rhythm of music brings us so much joy and excitement but playing musical instrument is even more fulfilling because it has many benefits.
This is due to the fact in high-income households parents can afford to pay for their children to receive a musical education while low-income households cannot. The article also stated that music has been linked to academic success, which leads to the conclusion that if one class is getting yet another advantage, no matter how miniscule, gaps will appear in a multitude of other areas in
Since, music is considerable as the useful tool and it makes things seems easier for people just by listening to it while concentrating or working on things. It is obvious that music is the best tool in relieving from stress and one study shows that music improves the performance of people at their work or children in school more effectively compared to their performance without music. Music does not just relaxing people but there are many benefits on the development of children with their brain, behavior, intellectual and cognitive that leads children to grow further than they could without music (Silberg, n.d.). This topic was interesting to work and conduct researches on because

Imagination can be developed when children are creating their own musical instruments as the child can discover the different sounds of different materials they use. Some children are appealed to music because of the variety of sounds the instruments can make. (Campbell et al, 2010). Music develops the artistic awareness, self-expression, self-growth, self-esteem and multicultural sensitivity which all forms part of the holistic development of the
Furthermore, all members: both the main researchers and the co-researchers must be in synergy. Their roles should be delineated and disclosed to all, they should be clear what the aims of the study are, its objectives and how it should be conducted. And they should compromise and be devoted to fulfill their role and the deadlines proposed, given that if one does not comply with what was assigned, other ends up taking up extra responsibilities and this provides an unnecessary burden. Likewise, all data collection methods should be supervised, tested and approved by the main researchers before executing them.
In this literature review, five articles will be reviewed, on the effects of music on child development in early childhood. Comparing research on children who have been exposed to music in early childhood, the effect of music on the development of the baby in the womb, and children who have not been exposed to music. While also making reference to research on how music therapy affects children with Autism and the effects of music therapy in the treatment of children with delayed speech development. The first article will examine the effects of Mozart 's music on child development.
Some studies showed that people who listened to classical music performed worse in memory tests than those who didn’t” (See). We do know that some children and adults seem to be calmer and more engaged when music is incorporated into learning. People feel that this does impact the individual. Some people do not believe that arts in education are beneficial, but others feel that they are very monumental is
