Here is an illustration of a little boy’s mother who had shared her story with me couple of years ago. She was so horrified of her son’s attitude who was influenced by the TV’s violence. I assume many other mothers are suffering similar cases all over the world. In this manner, Craig A. Anderson in The Influence of Media Violence on Youth (2003), mentioned that the intense violent media occupied an excessive amount of time of many children and youth. He emphasised the latest research has shown that the mass violent media in adolescence creates aggressive behaviour in their future life such as physical attacks or spouse offense.
Music has impacted people on a local and global scale because it brings people of all ethnicity, age, and gender together to enjoy what music has to offer today. As humans it is also important to remember that we feel the same things whether it is sadness or happiness. We all know what it feels to be sad or happy, and music can make a difference in how we portray our feelings. Different types of music influence all cultures, but what is important that while they are being influenced that they don’t loose sight of whom they are. The reason I say this is because staying to who you are or keeping in touch with your culture keeps you from being you, which in turn creates your own style of music.
Hip-hop has become an intricate part of American culture, such music can alter the minds of the listeners. Currently hip-hop instils improper beliefs that negatively influence American people. As reported by Susan Weber, a music therapist at MMB Music Inc., “if someone is rapping over and over again about killing cops, someone is more likely to kill cops because people are susceptible to suggestions” (Haynes, 2006). There is a tendency for violent gestures such as killing to be shown in rap. The advertisement of killing, makes the audience more prone to to thinking of killing.
A universal language understood all over the world through its rhythm and the sensation it can give a person. Music defines character and demonstrates emotions better than any other means of expression. As society changes, our favorite music changes too. Throughout the years, musical styles have reflected the society of the time and have progressed with changes in the world. The music change in society is proportional with technological advances as well.
This often has an impact on people and the society. Popular culture throughout the years has become a major part of why the entire world is so much more connected today than it has ever been. Popular culture by its terminology, literally means culture which is popular. The fact that popular culture can reach out to a wide audience helps its benefit of reflecting the society itself. In my opinion, popular culture simply reflects changes in attitudes, morality and values over time.
The lyrics propel the listener and the listener act or react to it. Our young women being one of it targets, and even they sometimes enjoy it, ignorantly. The horrible language, the use of intoxicating drink and drug use is poisoning the minds of the younger generation. Rap music has great effects concerning dress-style and attitudes. The young people and some older ones are consumed with the vulgarity of the lyrics.
How Art Positively Impacts Contemporary Culture Art is one of the biggest influencers in today’s world. It has the ability to make positive changes in a number of ways. It is a powerful form of expression used all around the world. In Yo-yo Ma’s writing, “Necessary Edges: Art, Empathy, and Education”, Ma discusses the importance of integrating arts in society and education; this differs from Rhys Southan’s writing, “Is Art a Waste of Time”, for it talks about how the “Effective Altruism” movement does not see art as valuable because it does not make major contributions to society. Art is a tool used to communicate with people; this tool positively impacts contemporary culture, for it brings different cultures closer together, changes opinions, and it is useful in education.
Although music really is an admirable music or in other words, teen agers get influenced by it positively, there are some reasons why music causes bad values on the students. First, the songs student’s listen too contains vulgarity. Second it misleads its listeners. Lastly, it shows indecent values. Through these claims we see why music students are becoming negative
Yes, no doubt these children will have something in common, which is idolizing the singer, but they carry with them bad values that has been portrayed by the singer. Once a value is transmitted via the mass media, there is a long-term change in values and this is the issue of how values get transmitted over generations (St. Clair & A. Busch, 2000). This leads to the next point which is most of the time viewers do not have the full ability to differentiate good and bad values that is projected by the mass media. A lot of these are projected from music, television, film, reality shows and most importantly the social media as well. When the mass media projects something for the audiences, it creates an image of portrayal for the eyes of society to “follow”.
Cyber-bullying has also caused many teenagers to commit suicide as a form to get away from such humiliation when bullied. Many cyber bullies often able to not get caught even if they wrote harsh comments. This affects the victims tremendously because as much as they want to catch and know who wrote it, they could not find them. Hence, asking for help seems helpless and they only way to get rid of this pain, they commit
