One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning a college degree, which has led me closer to obtaining my career objectives. My career objective is to become voice for those who lack one on their own and use my education and attentive nature to improve the lives of others. My objective is to promote meaningful change, build on strength and prevent problems. My life experiences have majorly contributed to my ultimate objectives. I have always been that person who has had to have his or her own voice and often times it was hard. I have also experienced domestic abuse, which led me to believe that I should help others who have become victims that are helpless. I have experienced firsthand when those who are suppose to help are helpless. …show more content…
My aunt was placed in a nursing home when she started to age and couldn’t live on her own anymore. My aunt was paralyzed and allegedly fell in a shower at the nursing home. She has been wheelchair bound for over thirty years and could not walk. There were so many unanswered questions as to how this could have happened. After the fall her health declined rapidly and she passed away. There were signs of physical abuse that was addressed but it seemed as nothing changed. We would visit the nursing home so much and I began to notice the environment and conditions where not ideal for living. There was a lack of proper care, nutrition, supervision of the workers and the patient to nurse ratio was inadequate. I was still in high school and decided that I will one day advocate for the elderly. My school counselor was the only person that helped me cope with the situation. These experiences exuded the lack of representation that exist amongst these groups that stimulate my drive to be a social …show more content…

If they inform the police, they can start an investigation. The health care institution also should make sure that elderly people attend to their appointments because that way they can know if elderly people receive an adequate treatment in their homes. Clearly identify the perpetrator and describe the circumstances leading to the abuse of the elder (risk factors) The perpetrator was a 59 years old women named Dorothea Puente.
One particularly horrifying event that occurred was in August 1970 when residents in a nursing home in Baltimore died from salmonella food poisoning. The unconcern for the seriousness of this incident shown by writers of the Washington Post demonstrated a need for federal regulations for the standard of care given by nursing homes. Thus, in 1971 President Nixon and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) established the Office of Nursing Home Affairs (ONHA) to oversee any programs involving nursing homes. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program was one initiated by ONHA to “improve the quality of care in America’s nursing homes and to respond to complaints submitted… about abuse and neglect of nursing home residents” (Hunt & Nadell, 2007,
At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. Unlike many other professions, case worker are not required to have any written consent to speak with
The victims either do not have the means to report or fear retribution for reporting the abuse. There have been many cases where the elderly are not even aware about the abuse. In such cases it is upto the visiting members to see to it that such abuse do not occur and if they come across such abuse take immediate action with the help of a skilled Injury Lawyer Kitchener. In a nursing home environment, there are broadly speaking two types of abuse.
Hillier and Barrow (2015), associate problems of caregiving with the responsibility itself, the caregivers personal health, role strains, strained family relationships, ect. With all of this strain on an informal caregiver it seems most beneficial to the caregiver and the elderly individual to consider admittance in to an assisted living facility. Once a basis has been established as to why an elderly person is admitted in to an assisted living facility, further insight shall be established to denote what is considered elder abuse. In this movie, Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities, several
1-800-MALPRACTICE Website Nursing Home Neglect/Abuse Introduction Nursing homes should be safe havens for the vulnerable elderly members of our community, but regrettably, this is not always the case. A recent report from the U.S. Office of the Inspector General found that 33% of residents in Medicare-approved nursing homes experienced serious adverse events that resulted in harm or death during the first 35 days of their stay. These unfortunate situations, which exist in nursing homes throughout the country, range from full-blown abuse such as sexual assault and over-medication to more passive forms of neglect such as failing to reposition bedridden residents often enough to prevent bed sores and inadequate supervision of those at risk for
Elder abuse takes on many forms ranging from physical to psychological, and a wide variety of different forms of abuse and neglect. In America alone, it is estimated that four million older people are victims of some type of abuse/and or neglect yearly. Specialists have speculated that for every case reported, there will be around twenty three cases that are not reported According to Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions, elder abuse can be defined as the infliction of physical, emotional/psychological, sexual or financial farm to another adult. This includes neglect, whether it be intentional or unintentional, by a caregiver.
They did not identify with the community around them; There were no schools nearby or parks where the patients could go visit. They had no transportation for the residents living there, in order for the residents to get back and forth to doctors apartments they had to rely on the EMS. The resident not having transportation to move around reflects conflict theory, which states, “ that group in society are engaged in a continuous power struggle for control of scarce resources”(Kirst-Ashamn,2011). Them not having a van to transport patients when needed caused many conflict within that environment. It also means that patients were not able to have events, go out to eat, or the casino; they were limited to staying in the nursing home all day instead of interacting with their environment.
This can be evidenced in a BBC Documentary (2014), which investigated abuse being carried out at number of care homes. Residents were left soaked in urine or faecal matter for hours at a time, others suffered dehumanisation and emotional pain by being refused to go to the toilet and left for two hours. There were also signs of physical assault, verbal abuse and psychological abuse in all three homes investigated by the BBC. Dunning (2010) credits that having an advocate in place at a care home setting could prevent any future abuse or neglect happening in the first instance. Lancaster Advocacy (2006) cited in Community Care (2006), believe that “Older people can be particularly vulnerable”.
The forms of abuse in nursing homes are physical, emotional, and sexual contact. The way to tell if a patient is being abused or neglected is the patient becoming nervous or scared of their caregiver. The way you approach them you
Factors leading to the abuse includes gender, lack of caregiving experience, physical health, dependency, social isolation of caregivers, and health problems. The victim was an old woman of 79 years old. The perpetrator did not have experience as a caregiver.
Since nursing homes tend to provide care to a vulnerable population they can be taken advantage of, overlooked or mistreated by staff and with residents potentially underreporting these incidents due to fear of retaliation by staff identifies this as significant ethical issues among nursing homes. The use of restraints that restricts a resident, whether physical or chemical applies to the ethical considerations within a nursing home as it not only impacts the resident, it can affect staff members and other resident’s safety. There is always the conflict between providing the resident with a fair amount of decisions regarding their activities of daily living, special accommodations, and independence. However, there is also the reflective issue of whether these freedoms impact the safety and the ability to comply with the institution's policy and how they are handled to deliver ethically appropriate customer service to those
Mrs. B, a chronically weak bed bound 78 year old woman was in the hospital for an acute change of mental status. Her baseline was that she was alert and oriented but needed assistance with activities of daily living except feeding herself. She had a 24/7 caregiver caring for her, but recently it was reduced to 6 hours a day because she was financially unable to pay for it. I was taking care of her and witnessed the social worker from Adult Protective Services speaking to her about her safety and trying to arrange for her to move into an assisted living facility. This would be paid for through a Medicaid waiver, but the patient refused.
Also, neglect can be, not paying attention to a person health issues, not giving support, left an individual unsupervised, failure in providing medical care for a person. However, as it relates to the case study, Mrs. Thompson before she died was badly abuse and has been neglected by a staff member that causes her untimely death. However, Mrs. Thompson had suffered from abused, first physically, whereby her head was shoved through a wall and causes a number of bruises. According to gov.uk, all abuses are to be reported when a service user is not being treated with the right care at a care home or if they have been mistreated by any care
