My Career In Public Health

All my life I wanted to become a doctor. My dream was to be the white knight who treated injuries, illnesses, and physical ailments. I worked hard towards my goal, and though I had a few setbacks, I eventually got my admission into medical school at UD. My interest in public health piqued when, as I awaited an MRI scan for a knee surgery, I started to notice a few differences between the Nigerian and Hungarian healthcare system. As far as I know, the quality of majority of the Nigerian healthcare institutions is generally considered rather poor. There are shortages of medical supplies, and the blood supply is not considered safe. The hygiene conditions are poor, especially outside the large cities. An estimate of just four doctors are available to about 10,000 inhabitants in any given region. Highly-trained experts often leave the country in order to pursue their profession in countries with better infrastructure or higher wages. As a result, patients suffer from neglect, especially at the public hospitals or clinics in Nigeria, and the morbidity and mortality of non-communicable diseases keep increasing. It sickens me to know that people still die from common preventable illnesses such as Malaria disease and Typhoid infection. This is a result of poor policy, negligence, and short-sightedness. I know that if proper policies and administrative rules are followed, a lot of lives could be saved. An example was the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa last year. It is a perfect example of proper policies and administration being followed, which led to a cessation in the spread of the disease. I strongly believe that change will come to Nigeria, and I want to be part of the process. Through proper interventions, planning and implementation of effective policies, I foresee being able to bring about much-needed change through my work with the Nigerian Ministry of Health, an NGO, or a non-profit affiliated with the …show more content…

Being the first school of public health in Canada to be accredited by the U.S. Council on Education for Public Health, it was obviously my first choice for my continued education. I especially like that the school runs productive individual research programs. One that caught my interest, mainly because my final year project is also about lifestyle change, was the School-based Intervention Research through Changes in Lifestyles and Environments (SIRCLE), which is run by like Kate Storey. I love that it is focused on school and community based strategies to promote healthy weights and prevent chronic diseases.In this regard, I deem my proposed study as a very meaningful aspect of my career pursuit. I am confident that I am a good fit for the Masters in Public Health program. I have studied the program content carefully and have concluded that it is indeed coherent. Therefore, I look forward to accomplishing this feat and also, obtaining this masters degree from your reputable
