I realized something about myself when I took my first college course. The summer of 2016 I began my first college course at the age of 15. I took college algebra online through South Dakota State University. Along with the course I had a packed summer schedule filled with camps and trips. These excursions included Farmers Union State Leadership camp, a mission trip with Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, “Geology Rocks!” camp, and 4-H Achievement Days. Yet, I was determined to take the course to get ahead with my math and found a flexible professor willing to accommodate my schedule. However, little did I know that the course would require more of me than ever expected in my high school math classes. I began the course in June with novice review …show more content…
Along with receiving my grade I was preparing to leave for a mission trip to Denver, Colorado with the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. This meant another two weeks of assignments completed in one. I remember sitting in my kitchen taking the quizzes the night before our departure feeling quite dispirited from the stressful week of work. However, after a wonderful week of volunteering in the Denver area I returned home ready to complete more assignments. The next camp, I planned to attend was “Geology Rocks!” camp sponsored by the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, SD. I was beyond excited to study the geology of the Black Hills like Sue Hendrickson for a week. At this point in the course the material was becoming unwieldy and I was starting to realize how many of my typical summer activities I was missing out on like lake days, bonfires, and baseball games. Unfortunately, I found it much harder to want to complete my work. However, I knew I was doing the right thing to accelerate my high school schedule. I knew that after geology camp there were only a few weeks of the course left so I persevered. After spending a week touring and studying the geographical wonders of the Black Hills I returned home to more math. I distinctly remember getting to our house in Rapid City, showering and sitting down right away to complete a weekly quiz that was due by …show more content…
Taking the course taught me a lot about myself. It taught me that when I need to get something done, I can buckle down and accomplish it. That no matter the circumstances where there is a will there is a way. I was so proud of myself for being able to accomplish not only a college course, but also two camps, a mission trip, and Achievement Days. It taught me about prioritizing and time management. It also taught me that there are sacrifices to be made to pursue a dream. In addition, it also taught me that no matter how much you practice and study all you can do is try your best. I think this was my biggest take away from the entire
After scoring 10 points over what I needed, then I immediately enrolled in the local Community College. I started out by taking two remedial math classes and one college level English and Psychology 101. I found that I loved school and it turns out that I am amazing at
This program has given me the skills I need to adapt to new problems that I would not have anticipated the day before and to have a strong work ethic. Through this group project and the numerous assignments I've had throughout college, I've improved my time-management abilities and learned how to set priorities more effectively. Not only from the coursework but also from the connections to Christ made in
It is July of this year, 2015, I am riding a charter bus from Stark State College in North Canton,Ohio to Pearl’s dinner in Chicago, Illinois. I am with this program called Upward Bound Math Science, which I had spent all summer with program. We make it to our destination, no problem. See this isn’t the challenge I face this is a day before the really challenge occurs. So that day we went to Wheaton College, which I left bored and barely informed about the school.
I did the work. Made honor roll.” (38) Melinda was already having a hard time dealing with the transition to high school, and math was making it
My view of the world changed a ton after taking this class. Before taking this class, I didn't know much about other countries, and what was happening around the world, but now I know what is happening worldwide. At the beginning of the school year, all of my friends were talking about how hard this class was supposed to be, and telling me I might should
Through it all I never gave up and I worked hard to get the grade I got and it taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to , and that One of the most difficult parts of life is deciding whether to walk away or try
It teaches us that anyone can change at any point in their life. Change is not only limited to a person 's outer beauty and personality. We need to understand that a person with a positive personality has the potential to turn into a person having the worst personality. Change is totally dependent on the environment a person is exposed to. Depending on that environment, a change might be positive or it might be a negative
This course will show videos on just about everything when it comes to being a better college student. I have learned about reading and writing strategies also. Watching the videos provided on Blackboard helped me because I am mainly a visual learner, for all you visual learners out there these videos will help you too. My most significant learning experience from this course would be learning how to do better on my tests. Future students, just breathe and relax when taking tests, if you fail there is always a way to do better.
It taught me that strength and perseverance can make a significant impact in life. I also learned that forgiveness and the ability to forgive is much more powerful than I ever realized. This novel sucked me into the story and its characters and took me on an emotional ride of highs and lows. Finally, it forced me to reevaluate my previous judgement of the homeless.
It showed me that yes we can have nice things but if you don’t know what it took to get there, you are missing the point. My mom had me when she was in high school yet she raised me along with my dad and both became successful enough to make me happy. I want to be able to give that to my kids and more. This would not be possible without knowing the cost of opportunity.
My misfortune in math later helped me realize that I needed to change my outlook on school. Instead of dismissing a subject just because I was not good at it, I would rather try and identify what I was doing wrong, and work to fix it. Taking the the ACT engage test helped me realize what my academic strengths and weaknesses are, and how I can use this knowledge to capitalize these strengths so I can be more successful in college than I was in highschool.
In the Israeli grade school, I joined an honors program to prepare me for advanced math studies, and in the U.S. secondary schools, I was placed in honors and college-level math courses. While the language barrier presented a hurdle in many of my courses, mathematics is inherently more universal. During my second year at UCF, I allowed my passion for the subject to guide my career choices and changed my major from Education to Mathematics. Despite taking the most difficult mathematics courses offered, I was placed on the Dean’s List three times and was eventually placed on the President’s
Math is a critical component of science, technology and all aspects of the universe. I have been challenging myself with higher level math because of my interest. After seeing my advanced skills, in the sixth grade, my math teacher moved me up to an algebra course, three grades above normal grade level. I aspire to continue to take advanced math courses in TJ so that I can understand science and technology better.
Such as the learning style and approach that made me understand that there is more than a style that can be used. Also, the self-assessment exercise helped me know what are my strengths and weakness in studying and much more. It’s also made me learn about myself that I am willing to
Taking this class has had a profound impact on me. I have learned how to properly study for a college class. Also, I learned how to effectively communicate and reach out to my professor. This was my first college course which gave me a learning experience about psychology and myself as a student. I have learned how to manage my time, study in ways that are better for me, focus on the task in front of me, and reaching out and taking opportunities.
