1. Part I: Leadership Definition Leadership is inspiring a strive for improvement. The improvement I’m talking about does not only apply to oneself, but to bring out the best in missions, processes, and most importantly others. The pillars of my leadership philosophy are based on fostering these improvements by focusing on (4a) health and wellness, (4b) growth, and (4c) customer service. 2. Growth No one in their 30s is the same person they were in their 20s. Growth is expected and essential in our development and maturity. As leaders, we have to encourage growth and take advantage of opportunities to learn new skills and experience new things. Formal education is a big part of learning but is not the only way to learn. We also learn from our experiences and interactions with people. A huge part of learning and growing as a person is making mistakes. Though it is difficult we have to step back at times and give opportunities where our people might fail. We have to remember that failure is not bad, it humbles and builds perseverance, teaches valuable lessons, and is a huge part of success. As leaders, we must have the humility to recognize that even the greatest leaders still have new skills and lessons that can be learned. Promoting growth ensures that we do not become complacent in our development. Customer Service From the Commandant to a non-rate at a station, we all work for someone. No matter what position you serve in the CG we should all be thinking with a customer in mind. We all have joined this service and have committed to a country that is bigger than ourselves. At the core of our service is duty and we have a duty vital to our customers. Having a strong moral compass and a strong sense of self is imperative. It not only creates a healthy culture and guides our principals, but also aids in our ability to provide a trusted and respected service to our customers. Like any business, your product is only as good as your reputation. None of this can be done alone. To achieve big, you need a big team. In the Coast Guard, we have some massive missions.
