In the analysis, “Write For Your Life,” Anna Quindlen’s thesis is that in the movie “Freedom Writers,” and in our everyday life, physical writing is a necessary form of therapy and release. Quindlen describes the movie and then points out specific lines that express the situation of the children. She continues by explaining how physical writing is important to our wellbeing but how it has disappeared from our lives. Lastly, she reflects how physical writing gave the “at risk” students a voice for the first time.
In David Updike’s “Summer”, Homer is overcome with an innocence yet fixated crush on Sandra. The adolescents spend their school-free summer at Sandra and Fred’s family lake house. This vacation, according to Homer, proves to be different. Homer, Fred and Sandra’s transition to adulthood is much like the change from summer to fall they are experiencing. If Homer could get out of his own head, then he could get the girl and summer of his dreams.
Poetry is a very unique type of writing. Poetry allows people to express their emotions in a way they feel comfortable. Every poem has a meaning to it, whether it is talking about food, interest, or a moment in their lives. Readers often mistake the poet as the narrator, although in many cases this is true. Many poets are the narrators and the poems are about their personal life. In contrary though, they sometimes write about matters happening around them.
Alvarez uses imagery to convey the speaker’s realization of wanting to become a poet and not be a thief. After deciding to read this book of poems Alvarez says “Page after page, your poems/ were stirring my own poems words rose, breaking the surface;/ shattering
Sleep is symbolic for peace and harmony. However sometimes the war you face while awake can haunt your sleep. The protagonist Antonio (Toni) in Bless Me Ultima by Rudolpho Anaya is forced to face the differentiating cultures and influences projected by his elders. His parents attempt to live their dreams through Toni but only cause the development of the opposite within Antonio. The conflict Toni faces has such a tremendous impact on him that it besets his dreams.
On Friday, March 3, 2017, the students at Montevallo High School had a special speaker visit. His name is Jesse Jackson. The name sounds familiar because Jackson worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Jesse Jackson was born on October 8, 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina. When his mother was sixteen he was born out of wedlock to professional boxer and well-known figure in the black community, Noah Louis Robinson. However, when his mother married, he was adopted by Charles Henry Jackson, his step father. During high school he experienced segregation and Jim Crow laws. After high school he attended the University of Illinois on a football scholarship. He then transferred to North Carolina A&T. At North Carolina A&T he became involved in local civil rights protests. He then attended Chicago Theological Seminary but dropped out to focus directly on the Civil Rights Movement. He worked closely with MLK Jr. and was even present when he was shot. After the assassination he made is his own Civil Rights operation named People United to Serve Humanity. He ran for president twice. Needless to say, he is a very remarkable and astounding man.
This poem is about the comfort of the safe past and the tension created by change.
“ You have to be able to accept failure to get better.” This quote means you have to accept failure to be a better person. This quote applies to the story “Electric Boogaloo” because his older self says don’t get caught up in your failures, laugh and be able to tell the embarrassments to friends and family. The author of “ Electric Boogaloo” shows how to push through obstacles in life, how to never give up on what you love, and to accept your embarrassments, and overcome the feelings of the memories. Pushing through your obstacles is a detail from the story, which really spoke to me. This detail speaks to everyone, not everyone has the perfect life everyone and has rough times. I had rough times and I still have rough times. This detail is
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one. This is an important role of poetry because everyone loses something precious to them at some point in their life. Her next example talks of a person who can receive
In the novel Bless Me, Ultima, the author Rudulfo Anaya utilizes juxtaposition between the unique characteristics of Márez family and Luna family for the purpose of indicating uncertain destiny of Antonio, conclusively unveiling that whether how big the influences are done on one’s destiny, it can only be determined by one’s own choice. Antonio’s parents have different perspective of Antonio’s future since they belong to two distinct families, and one night Antonio dreams about his birth: “This one will be a Luna…will be a farmer and keep our customs and traditions…He is a Márez… His forefathers were conquistadores, men as restless as the seas they sailed and as free as the land they conquered. He is his father’s blood”(Anaya 6). Luna family
Figurative language is the glue to all poetry writing. It is what holds poetry together and without it, poetry would be plain and boring. Figurative language adds depth and creates a whole new dimension full of possibilities that readers can enjoy. It is the most powerful tool that an author can use because it can be used in a way no other piece of literature can. It makes poems unique and the utilization of figurative language amplifies the meaning of the main message of the author. It can turn ordinary phrases into a new, deepened and more meaningful message. It makes the author 's writing better and gives the reader and new look on the main message. It enhances the poem and evokes the reader which overall, makes the poem enjoyable. It allows the author to convey the desired message through metaphorical and symbolic imagery rather than just words and language.
The poem "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye speaks about how you experience kindness and what it really is. The main point in this poem is that in order to experience people's kindness you need to experience hurt, sorrow, and loneliness. The author says that when you loose everything and have no one or thing that when kindness comes along it lifts you up "and then goes with you everywhere/ like a shadow or a friend" (33-34). When portraying this message the author uses a sad but hopeful tone to send the message she wants to say. This tone helps portray the message because you can feel how sad someone is when they are lonely and they have nothing. Then when the author changes the tone at the end of the poem in the last stanza to hopeful tone the reader can feel the hope and happiness that a person feels when they are down and they are given kindness.
The poem is written in first person and in a free verse. The poem does not have a specific order, and the reader cannot find a pattern, in which the author organizes the poem. The rows do not rhyme and they are short.

During the 1900s, there were many famous authors who wrote about African Americans and Civil Rights. This was what was going on during this time period. Segregation and discrimination towards blacks was increasing. Two famous authors were Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Langston Hughes wrote the poem “I, Too, Sing America.” Maya Angelou wrote the poem “Still, I rise.” These two poems both have their own meaning but are still similar in many ways.
