I guess that it really shows you that everyone truly has a talent that they excel at. This personal refection made me really understand the role that math plays in my life and how math effects my life. I also am hoping that my new found knowledge helps shape my relationship with how I think of math. But for the most part I have a better understanding and a new found admiration concerning math that I never has had prior to talking this course and I am hoping to learn more about it along the way as this as this course
Bruner Piaget influenced Bruner on his research about Child development, he believed that learning is an active process and that learners need to develop their own knowledge and ideas using their current or previous knowledge. The effective instruction includes: • Personalized: instruction should relate to learner’s experiences that motivates the student to learn from within one’s self. • Content Structure: Content must be designed so it can be easily grasped by the student. He also called this aspect a “Spiral curriculum” building thinking and learning skills over time to make it deeper and more complex, builds on itself. • Sequencing: An important aspect of material presentation.
First, as an educator, we need to emphasized to the learners the importance of learning something in application to their current and future practice. Second, the learners move from being independent and self-directed, enhancing their ability to solve problems on their own and be independent. Third, incorporate learner’s experiences into the learning process. As people mature their amount of experiences expand and serve as a rich resource for learning.
Introduction Personal Philosophy Good order is essential in a school if children are to be able to fulfil their learning potential. In the classroom, disruptive behaviour not only reduces children’s ability to concentrate and absorb information, but also unsettles children and causes immense stress for teachers. While the problem of classroom management in the school setting needs to be addressed, the definition of classroom management must be established.
For this situation is characterized by a feeling of embarrassment in front of the problem. Dewey wanted students to learn through experience and to think and reflect critically on their experience. Students need to learn practical, pragmatic daily life skills in order to build a better society. “Good education should have both a societal purpose and purpose for the individual student” (Dewey Chapter 12). Once we have a theory of experience, then as educators, we can organize our subject matter progressively in a way that it takes account of students ' past experiences, and then provides them with experiences which will help to open up, rather than shut down, a person 's access to future growth experiences, thereby expanding the person 's likely contribution to society.
To perform as a good citizen in a real society, you must be well educated with not only the core subjects but also the wisdom of life. Thus, transferring the knowledge you learned in school into real life is significantly important. If you do not have the ability to transfer your knowledge, education becomes pointless. Teachers should be able to work as facilitators to guide their students to come up with the solutions independently to their problems. I want to teach so that I can create an inclusive classroom environment that is perfect for learning. My goal is to get students excited to learn. I will accommodate to all of my students according to their individual needs. I aspire to be a teacher who respects their students and gets respect back.
I love the idea Tsuruda had of having students write reflections about their learning. I think this is a great way to gain insight on how his students learn, what they understand, and what they still need help on. I would like to use reflections in my math classroom one day because I believe it takes you into the student’s mind which will further help me as a teacher facilitate ways to build off the child’s knowledge in a way that is unique to their learning style. DEWEY THEORY Dewey’s theory emphasizes the need to learn by doing. He believed that human beings learn through a 'hands-on ' approach. He believed that ‘to prepare the child for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities ‘and this truly can only be achieved through a hands on approach. Dewey’s theory emphasized the fact that a teacher centred curriculum, plan, and teach in many cases causes children to look away from learning but a child centred plan curriculum and learning where the child’s strengths and interest are built on.
Constructivism defines knowledge as constructions of experiences; human not just receives knowledge, but forming, creating, finding, and developing their own knowledge (Mularsih, 2009, p.41). Mularsih said that, based on constructivism, the most important thing of learning process is students’ activeness in constructing knowledge through interaction in learning experiences (2009, p.42). Constructivism opposes passive learning; classroom should be a community of learning engaged in an activity, reflection, and creative experiences (Brummelen, 2002, p.32). My interview with Mrs. Coty was very enlightening. I’ve seen her in action, being her Practicum student, but actually getting to discuss some of these things with her was fascinating. It’s always important to know why someone wants to be a teacher. Mrs. Coty shared a genuine love of learning with me and a mission to help make math easy and enjoyable for all middle schoolers so that they can go on to conquer math in higher grades. A lot of the reasons that I want to be a math teacher line up with what Mrs. Coty said as well.
As the education coordinator, I will first approach my subject matter as a system itself. I will design my materials first by identifying their purpose, then second their function and finally deriving the structure of the educational materials from the necessary functions. In developing educational materials, I will also want to familiarize myself with my students as I know that according to communication models they may interpret what I communicate differently than I intend due to how they “decode” (Nelson, Staggers, 2014). Once I have an understanding for what my students know, I will move forward by assessing their learning styles as I believe that is an incredibly valuable thing for an educator as well as a student to know.
