When and why, have I used math from this class in my life both present and past. I usenumbers in my everyday life, between accounting for my house hold, to finding the best buy atthe grocery store. To learning the difference between metric and standard system, so that I canget the correct parts for my van. Math as a whole is just a part of life. You deal with it on a dailybasis. From something as simple as counting your change, to balancing your checkbook, to sittingdown at work and doing the bookkeeping and payroll. Over the years, I have learned that mathand numbers are important to me and it is something I wanted to use in my daily life and career.I am currently enrolled in Wright to become a medical insurance coder. It was great, I was able to stock up onsome canned vegetables, rice side dishes, and even some meat products. With the rice dishes theyare normally sold for $1.75 each but with the 10 for $10, I was able to save $7.50. Can goods thatare normally $1.34, but by buying them on sale I saved $3.40. Fresh vegetables, I bought a bunchof tomatoes that was on the same sale. I used the extras to make fresh salsa and to make somehomemade sauce for my spaghetti. When I cook I have learned to proportion my meals. I start with a smaller plate, it is 8inchesacross. To measuring the side dishes in to 1 cup or even ½ cup depending on what I am dishing up.It helps keep the carbohydrate count downs and helps with fat content. I try my best to cook withfresh lean mean, you pay a bit more but in the end for me it is something I have to have. I haveheart issues, and lack a gallbladder. So, I am unable to process high fat foods and meats. My sweetheart has heart issues and needs lower cholesterol so another reason for cooking with fresh foods, not frozen preprocessed meals.Even with my cooking I have learned that some oils are better than others. And that youcan have goodies by changing a few key ingredients and amounts of the ingredients you can makea low sugar/ carb dessert or goodies and have the richness but it’s healthier for you. I make whatI call goodie pancake, instead of adding ½ cup of sugar, I add 2 TBSP of sugar, or splendia (sugarequivalent) A TBSP of cinnamon. And dash of skim milk. It adds a richness to the pancake and acertain rich flavor. You use math for every day, you count change, you think about how much is in your checkbook, when scanning your card at the local grocery store. When you sit down to pay your bills. Youhave to use some basic math for your basic everyday usage. When you sit down into your car, doyou not look at your gas gage and see if you are low? How much is in there? My tank currentlyreads a ½ tank. And it
After compiling all of the ingredients into a numbered list, I find out that every product “purchased” at Harris Teeter would account for $116.19 over the budget. The few adjustments I made to my shopping list beforehand did not help reduce the total to a reasonable price either. While I was going through all of the products at home, I crossed out a few unnecessary items that were optional or switched to products with a lower price just to see if I could be within the budget. Eventually, after I was done “shopping” and tallying up all of the prices, the cost still exceeded the price that I calculated in my head. As I went down the aisles searching for foods on my grocery list, I kept a close eye out for products that had nutritious labels such as organic, fresh, or low in sodium so that the college student I chose could receive the right amount of nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle.
“One thing is certain: The human brain has serious problems with calculations. Nothing in its evolution prepared it for the task of memorizing dozens of multiplication facts or for carrying out the multistep operations required for two-digit subtraction.” (Sousa, 2015, p. 35). It is amazing the things that our brain can do and how our brain adapt to perform these kind of calculations. As teachers, we need to take into account that our brain is not ready for calculations, but it can recognize patterns.
Whether I'm gaining weight trying to get bigger, or eating less carbs because I'm trying to lose weight, my caloric intake has to be very precise. When I'm cooking, I have to weigh everything I eat and I have to eat at specific times. I have done a lot of research trying to figure out which is the best food for me and my body and for the goals I am trying to reach. I like to have my meals planned out for the entire
Basic math skills were utilized daily; for example, mortgage payment estimates, interest rates, and commission percentages were calculated frequently. Unfortunately, I got started in Real Estate right around the time of the market crash,
Also besides working out there I also am coaching more days of the week usually helping and motivating others to get healthy. I try to eat healthy but sometimes it hard to do so with classes, as it seems like I’m always on the go. My trouble comes with portion intake. I understand what portions to eat, however usually I get more than one portion in a sitting and in the end it hurts me. One thing that I want to work on is portion control and eating smaller meals throughout the day.
In 7th grade, I transferred from Bryan Middle school to Visitation Catholic School and there was not enough room in the accelerated math program, which ultimately set me behind. In high school, I found myself bored in math and knew I needed to challenge myself, so I ended up setting up a meeting with the math department head and we discussed my options. Sophomore year, I ended up taking two math classes, which was not easy; double the test, quizzes and lessons! However, by taking two math classes, I was able to get myself into a higher math class which ultimately was my goal, and achieving it was an amazing feeling.
This semester has been an ongoing challenge for me but has been an enjoyable one and I have not been presented with any impossible tasks. I have never been much of a writer, and during the course of this semester, I 've struggled to meet length requirements on the assigned essays. However, I do understand that not everyone is an excellent writer or even has to enjoy writing to get a good grade in this 1A class. From the start, with the first essay, I pushed myself to do my best and looked to multiple outlets to polish my writing, such as the online tutor, the writing center, the internet and the writer 's handbook.
Our task was to create a calculator with the resources we were provided. Being thrown into something I have never experienced before was a learning curve, but eventually I was able to program my calculator to compute 2 +2. It might seem elementary now, but to me this experience was the spark that hooked me into the world of technology.
Through the course of this class I have been exposed to number of new ideas and concepts that I was unaware of. Many of these ideas play out in my everyday life which has given me a chance to experience them and observe them. Know that I have been exposed to the Ideas I can look back over my life and point out were some of these concepts played a major role. One concept that has been present in my life and played a major role in not only my life but many other people even shaping many people's future is racism. Hensil defines racism as discrimination on the basis of race (Henslin 245).
Mathematics is elegant, and simple; you just have to stick with it to see it. That night, I called my cousin, and gushed to her--I could hear her smile through the phone. Someone finally got it. Pure math isn’t pretentious, useless nonsense, it’s art for art’s sake.
Math is often one of the hardest subjects to learn. Teachers know rules that can help students, but often they forget that those rules become more nuanced than presented.
Increase fruits and vegetable consumption; make sure vegetables and fruits of my choice are in at least two of the three meals per day. Increase water intake and decrease soft beverages (Strategy, label a water bottle with goal times throughout the day). For portion control, every time I eat my meals, I will incorporate my plate. I will pay more attention to food labels and calculate daily calorie intake. If I balance the food groups, my body will receive the proper nutrients and vitamins.
PCELL: Let me give you a little bit of background on the project, and particularly why I am here at Tri-C. I don’t know how familiar you are with some changes in developmental and first year undergraduate mathematics. It used to be that everyone took courses that were kind of on a calculus track, even though they were never going to take calculous unless that fit unto their major. So, they took classes like college algebra, finite math and trig, just because we have been teaching them for decades.
Even the teachers don’t know the true meaning of math. There are
Having the knowledge and basic skills of mathematics enables a person to make personal and economic decisions in everyday life. A person can still succeed without achieving
