According to the guidelines that have been established by Cleveland State University’s American Association of University Professor’s (AAUP’s) contract, 2016, promotion to the rank of clinical assistant professor shall be based on evidence of excellence in teaching and clinical supervision. In this teaching statement, I provide the rationale and evidence to demonstrate that I have modeled excellence in teaching and clinical supervision for my students. Background
I began my career as a physical therapist in 2001 after graduating from The Ohio State University. I was first employed at Easter Seals in Columbus, Ohio where I provided physical therapy services within an early intervention, centered-based facility. In 2003, I was accepted to

Since my first year as faculty, I have been involved in 7 core courses; 3 would be categorized as didactic courses, while my function in the remaining 4 courses is to provide clinical supervision. (See table of courses taught in Section IV). In regards to the 3 core didactic courses, I have an average rating of 4.66 (on a five-point scale) with 94% of students ranking me as an excellent or above average instructor. When assessing my competency with clinical supervision, I have an average rating of 4.94 (on a five-point scale) with 99% of students ranking me as an excellent or above average instructor. (See summaries of student evaluations and graphical representations of data in Section IV). My role (i.e. as a course coordinator, course instructor or lab instructor) has varied based on my teaching load and between academic years due to redistribution of workload and to accommodate staffing changes within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. As a certified pediatric specialist, I have also been asked to come in as a guest lecturer in other courses both within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program as well as within the School of Health Sciences. The following provides a summary of the core courses for which I am …show more content…
Longitudinal data was completed for three of my core courses, DPT 776: Physical Therapy Management of Complex Conditions V, DPT 662: Interactions I- Patient-Practitioner Interactions, and DPT 788: Applied Physical Therapy III (a clinical supervision course). The results of these evaluations have demonstrated sequential progress in all areas, including skills in using voice and body, teaching techiniques and behaviors and organizing material/content. I have facilitated the development of program plans of study, in fulfillment of Perkin’s requirements, and currently working on program pathways. We are revising our course offerings and sequencing through a SREB audit completed last year. Suggested program changes and new program implementations are being evaluated against Pierce and King County Workforce data and job growth projections. Staff certifications, trainings and curriculum development needs are currently being assessed for implementation. Using state and national professional teaching standards and assessments I have provided support for teachers through assistance programs, and professional development.

Introduction Clinical Supervision Supervision is indicated as a formal process of overlooking by a more experienced individual as the supervisor for productivity, performance and development. Large business, organization and academic training program apply supervision commonly for educational and management purpose. Within these business or academic structure, the role of supervisor includes providing guidance, affirming the quality of service and evaluating the efficiency. Administrative management and facilitating communication between departments are also the responsibilities of the supervisor in large business or organization. However, clinical supervision is usually referred to the supervision related to medical treatment with real patient
One of many reasons why I am drawn towards the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is because of its rigorous curriculum and the school’s mission and values. Being immersed to a primary care clinic during the beginning of school, in opinion, is vital to the learn experience as it gives the students a hands-on experience. Furthermore, the school’s main focus on diversity appeals to my attention as it promotes learning from various students with different backgrounds. Diversity in the school setting corresponds to the real world since physicians will always encounter patients from all walks of life. Being a student who quickly learns from firsthand experiences and who can easily collaborate with other individuals, I believe I will contribute
My core values have improved because I have been more focused and understanding to my patient's desire or achieve in receiving physical therapy treatment. As a clinician, I take more responsibilities of accepting errors and consequences and self-correct without taking in a negative manner or revenge. I became more flexible with changes of the style of treatment, such as new advanced technologies based on evidenced based practice, linked to excellence (core value). The physical therapy code of ethics has impacted my career of being more aware in preventing liabilities, such as performing activities beyond the scope of my practice. There is a professional consideration of each other's limitations, by engaging in exploration to add to the discovery of facts recognized in the scope of practice (APTA, 2003).
Watching my mother and father, volunteer countless hours coaching little dribblers inspired me to take up a servant’s heart. This past summer I assisted my brother-in-law in coaching his little dribbler’s basketball team and I found the experience extremely rewarding. My participation in that event left me with an overwhelming feeling of selfless joy. Therefore, I’ve decided to pursue my passion through a career in the healthcare field in hope that I can give back to the community that has shaped me into the man I have
Professionalism for a D.P.T student is to acquire the highest level of skill, judgment, and competency expected of a future Physical Therapist (PT). According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), PT’s must aspire to the principles of “altruism, excellence, caring, ethics, respect, communication, and accountability” when working with other professionals to achieve health and wellness in “individuals and communities”. It becomes the responsibility of D.P.T students to adopt these principles but to do so requires practice and application of these principles. Now to succeed in this aspect, I believe a D.P.T student should focus on engaging in acts of altruism, communication, and accountability because these are attributes that
The fact that learning never stops, that you work and collaborate with some of the smartest minds around, and the uniqueness of each patient gets me very eager to enroll in a challenging DPT program with proven student success. I am very thankful for the experience I’ve had so far observing physical therapy and studying the sciences in my undergrad. I don’t think as many other careers are so open to allow students into their workspace and I look forward to one day being able to spark another young student’s interest in rehab therapy. Before my sophomore year in high school, there was little I knew about the physical therapy field but since then I have spent a great deal of time observing physical therapists and from all that I’ve learn I know that I want to become a physical
As a visual representation, a pie chart of the work setting distribution is provided with the data obtained from “Physical Therapist: What It Takes to be a DPT.” Regarding the “Other” portion of the chart, an extensive range of settings are included within this piece such as, schools, sports facilities, and traveling positions (“Role”). The different work settings of a PT may also be dependent on their specialty, but more than one specialty can work alongside each other in the same work environment. Accordingly, there are five distinct specialties: orthopedic, geriatric, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and pediatric; along with two other emerging practices, vestibular rehabilitation and women’s health (“Five
Although I had always considered a career in teaching, it wasn’t the initial plan that I had set up for myself. However, I did have a plan of working with children. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology in the hopes of continuing my education with an ultimate goal of becoming an occupational therapist. I wanted to pursue a career in home health working with pediatrics.
Each of those are really important for the physical therapy life. Compassion is what is mostly needed when the therapist is assisting a patient. Detail oriented is when physical therapists should have strong analytic and observational skills to diagnose a patient's problem, evaluate treatments, and provide safe, effective care. Dexterity is when therapists use their hands to provide manual therapy and therapeutic exercises. Interpersonal skills is when therapists must be able to explain treatment programs, motivate patients, and listen to patients' concerns to provide effective therapy.
At all of these clinics and hospitals I have learned a variety of techniques, while completing the fundamentals of cleaning, organizing work area, securing patients with therapy equipment and motivating patients. Having to work under different physical therapists has shown me how to assist licensed physical therapists efficiently from their long hours of hard work. These educational experiences have taught me to go above and beyond my dreams and to expand my
Physical Therapy Physical Therapists provide rehabilitation for injuries and help maintain stability. “Some history of Physical Therapist formed their first professional association in 1921 called the American Women’s physical therapeutic association. In the late 1940s, the association had changed its name to the American Physical Therapy Association. Physical Therapy was developed when the association’s membership swelled to 8,000 and the number of physical therapy education programs across the US increased from 16 to 39”(“APTA History”). Although many people may think being a physical therapist is hard because of the qualifications needed, the daily work, salary, and needs of the service have drawn my attention to the field.
Throughout the student 's career in the doctorate physical therapy degree program, they will be placed in
What I find to be the most enjoyable aspect of physical therapy is finals week. When everybody is scrambling to attain as much knowledge as possible. Our problem base learning program enables us to rely on one another when unable to grasp a certain. I enjoy seeing the different break out tools and the variation of methodologies being used to grasp certain concepts.
