Psychology is the study of the mind and it is also the study of the human behavior. Psychology teaches a person to understand unconscious thoughts a person thinks. It also allows someone to view the world around them in a different way than they used to before. With the basic understandings of psychology, people will be able to understand one another more easily. Also people will know how and why people think a certain way in certain situation. I am most excited to learn about the brain and the nervous system. I am interesting about learning this topic because there are many things to learn about the brain and the nervous system. Since the human body depends on the brain and the nervous system, it is the most important part of the human body …show more content…
The author debunks 10 common myths many people believe to be true. I found this article fascinating because I was always curious about the brain for my whole life. Additionally, I have been told many myths about the brain and I’ve always wondered if they were true. I learned that most misconceptions about the brain are usually deemed false. One thing I found surprising was that the brain still develops after the age of 40. Numerous amounts of people believe that the brain stops improving and developing once people reach a certain age. As people grow older, their brains’ develop in different kinds of ways compared to when people were younger. For example, vocabulary, wisdom, and emotion all increase as people get older. This article relates to my life because I believe in some myths about the brain. A few of the myths I believed in were mention by the author in this article. It helped me realize that the brain is a very unique organ in the human body. The article also relates to me because when I get older my brain will not function compared to when I was a kid, but to learn that the brain develops in other ways for older people is …show more content…
Studying longer and taking the test involves too much information to cram and memorize for the test. But when students take a pretest with minimal study time, those students tend to have better scores because they know what specific information the test will be over. The author does three experiments to prove his statement. Throughout these experiments, the students who took either a pretest or tested before some of the students had a better grade than those that took the test later. The reason is because taking similar pretests to the main test helps the student easily remember the information. What I learned from this article is that longer study hours doesn’t always mean better scores. What I found surprising is how pretests actually helped the students’ scores instead of hurting them. Another surprising factor was how studying longer could actually make you more forgetful on the topics. This relates to me because whenever there is a test, I tend to study for long periods of time. Also taking quizzes helps me know what the topics for the test will be
James Watson once said, “The brain is the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe”. It is responsible for every single movement in our body; from thinking, learning, breathing, creating memories and more. But the brain is not always perfect. We all have occasional “brain farts” or misperceptions of the world around us. Sometimes we believe that we have experienced vivid moments that we have never actually been through.
Starting with the advent of writing, people’s brains have been rewired to think in the way of their current technologies. Studies in neuroplasticity reveal that the human brain can be still be reshaped even after reaching adulthood. The invention of
Prior to this discovery, scientists believed that our brains developed during childhood and that the neurological connections formed were static throughout our lives. Research has shown that this is not true, our brains can change although plasticity decreases once we reach
“All the hard work in the world won’t overcome a brain-based deficit” (Grandin and Panek 2). To say that copious amounts of practice alone will make a person an expert is an “injustice to the naturally gifted and a disservice to the naturally ungifted” (2). Our brains, as human beings, simply do not allow us to be an expert at something solely by practice. A person could become great at something through practice, but they must first have the genetic capacity to learn and excel at it.
In the present global world, we are living in the era of advanced technology like computes, smart phones, TV and so on; and I love that. As early day goes by technology is changed. Technology makes things happen so faster. In the article, “Meet your iBrain,” the authors Gary Small and Gigi Vorgan talk about the current explosion of digital technology and how is changing the way we lives, how we communicate, and it is also rapidly and profoundly altering our brains. “Our brain is evolving right now at a speed like never before” Gary and Gigi.
Since a person’s brain is so fragile, considering how important it is becomes even more daunting. After all, the brain, is the body’s ultimate controller, taking charge of even a person’s own desires and actions once it is compromised by injury, illness, or other ailment (Cahalan, 2012, pg.87). As much as the human race wants to believe they are in control, the truth is one event could drastically change
The author points out that “Brain imaging studies reveal that the regions of the adolescent brain responsible for controlling thoughts, actions and emotions are not fully developed.” Brain imaging studies have repeatedly shown that the brains in younger people are still developing well over the age of 18. Garinger states that
Sandra Aamodt” From the Neuroscientist's perspective it has been shown that the human brain is not actually fully developed until one reaches 25. In an interview with Dr. Sandra Aamodt, host of WAMU 88.5 Tony Cox questions just exactly what it means for a brain to mature into “adulthood”. Amodt dives into details about the difference in decision making, crime rates, and gender being a factor as well. The connection between brain maturity and crime rates could be crucial when deciding the proper age for being tried as an adult in court. Drastic changes occur in a person's life when one becomes 18.
”(healthychildren.org) It is true that the adolescent brain is still developing and not fully mature, but they should
Sol Lim, like Kaiser, agrees with the previous statement and talks about how the lack of connectivity throughout the brain development can essentially help recover and enhance the brain functions by rearranging the systems more effectively (Knapton, 2013, para.9). Considering that fact, instead of approaching so many people when you are lost, you can ask people who have lived in the area for the longest time and easily find your way around (Knapton, 2013, para.10). In a comparable method, decreasing some predictions in the brain assists in emphasizing on crucial knowledge, such as connecting the sound of an accustomed person’s voice to their face (Knapton, 2013, para.12). While examining the brains of 121 volunteers amongst the ages of 4 and 40, they established important alterations. Earlier studies show that the brain re-organizes itself and that there is more activity all throughout puberty (Knapton, 2013, para.13).
Becoming Brain Experts Research points that Eduardo Leite’s horrible accident, did not affect him as it affected Phineas Gage in the 19th century. Both survived the accident, which gouged their frontal lobe. Sadly, Mr. Gage behavior changed negatively to the point that his former employees did not take him back. On Eduardo Laite’s case in recent years, a pole pierced his frontal lobe, apparently missing the area of self-control, high level decision making, problem solving, and social behavior.
Today, scientists build off of old and new brain research to try and figure out what areas of the brain they have not discovered. They work together to come up with new technology that will benefit the world. A couple discoveries that have been made are being able to read a mouse’s mind, and prosthetics that connect with the brain. To read the mind of a mouse, they show the mouse an image and then
I believe that developing our mind involves acknowledging God, understanding the meaning of life and loving all of it, whether good or bad. I agree with the author that it goes beyond old injuries, pettiness and overcoming prejudices. The article concludes on the legacy by encouraging us to question what we leave behind because being old and heavy for years, could be
Another disadvantage of exams is that they “Can create a lot of stress on both educators and students” (“Pros and Cons of Standardized Testing”). It is well-known that university-level students have many late nights studying information they believe to be on their exams days before midterms and finals, which causes them to be fatigued, stressed, and anxious. Similarly, professors may become frustrated at only being able to teach information that is going to be on the exam, which can hinder overall knowledge about topics in the
The first group did significantly better than second group, and that’s because studying for shorter amounts of time over the course of more days lets the information become more familiar to you. The more familiar you are with something, you become more confident in the subject. Confidence is essential when it comes to testing, but not too confident. This is will be the scenario if the test is worth many points on our grade, but we have enough time to study. The fact that this grade can really turn around our grade is intimidating, but the more familiar we are with the information, the better we will preform.
