Reflecting back on my experience at the NEOBIF conference this past Friday I was able to gain many different educational opportunities and to interact with different traumatic brain injured (TBI) patients. The conference was beneficial to me as a graduate student because I was able to observe and interact with multiple TBI patients. Prior to the conference I had some concerns regarding the event, but after the event I was able to reflect on my concerns and I realized that I was never put into any of those situations I was concerned about. After attending the NEOBIF conference on Friday, I had many different learning opportunities and experiences. The most surprising thing to me was how many individuals not only had a TBI but had other co-morbidities …show more content…
Before the event happened, I was concerned about getting into an uncomfortable situation that I would not be able to get out, but when I was at the event I was never in an uncomfortable situation with a patient and every interaction that I had went smoothly. Many of my concerns were minimal and most of it was just being anxious for the what ifs that may happen. After the event, I realized that if you just take one step at a time and analyze each situation and react appropriately that you will not be in any uncomfortable situation. Many of the individuals that we interacted with had caregivers to give them cues if they needed them and I did not come across any inappropriate conversations. In conclusion, the event was very informational and an enjoyable experience to have as a graduate student of Occupational Therapy. Many of the interactions I had with the survivors I will be able to learn from and use for future interactions with TBI patients. After leaving the event I realized that many of the concerns I had prior were not that major of issues to be concerned about. All in all, I am very thankful for the opportunity we had to come and observe and participate in the NEOBIF
In some ways, the growing awareness of concussions has created a new market for entrepreneurs to cash in on. The advantage of this is that there are some good products out there. However, we are also witnessing a flooding in the market with pricey products that have no scientific evidence to back them up. You also have to be careful because of certain clinics that have been opened and staffed by so-called specialists who have no training or expertise on alleviating the symptoms of brain injury. Buyers have to beware because everything from physical therapists to dermatologists to orthopedists have opened these unscrupulous clinics across the country.
The initiative pledged $20 million to fund technology and research over five years, taking in three stages which seek to: understand and diagnose mild traumatic injury; invent materials and technology that will protect the head from traumatic injury; develop advanced materials with energy absorbing and energy dissipating
Survivors of traumatic brain injuries are lucky. Two examples of traumatic brain injury survivors are Phineas Gage and Tracy Morgan. Both survived their accident, and they both were given a second chance at life. However, their lives were forever changed. Phineas Gage was in a railroad blasting accident when his tamping iron struck some black powder.
I was pleased with how caring, resourceful, outspoken and helpful every individual was. One of the major reasons why I attended, “Dinner and Dialogue” was to get aware of what facilities were
Lately, injuries are starting to become more common as the sports start their seasons. A big topic on injuries that has come up a lot more recently is concussions. As little as five years ago society was not as informed on concussions as we are today. there are still much we don 't know on head injuries. Studies are being held to help improve our knowledge so this injury can be taken care of properly and efficiently.
The NA meeting had a guest speaker named Adam, the most surprising thing about meeting were candor and humor evoked by the speaker. Adam acknowledged that he has been addicted to drugs for seventeen years, and this behavior started when he was in the 7th grade. Adam was genuinely outspoken and humorously shared being in and out of treatment facilities over 28 times costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The group really identified with the speakers story, and this was exhibited by laughter and comments from the crowd. Actually, I didn’t have any perceived notions about attend NA meeting, my only contention was to better understand this community.
The lead researchers, Dr. Ira Casson and Dr. David Viano resigned from the committee and Dr. Hunt Batjer along with Dr. Richard Ellenbogen were appointed as the new leads. In addition to shaking up the MTBI, the NFL used independent researchers and institution for a lot of their investigation on CTE going forward. Donating $1 million to independent institutions such as Dr, Mckee’s Center for the Study of Traumatic encephalopathy, an institution which they discredited in prior years. Overall, the NFL has pledged at least $30 million to fund research in brain trauma and to fund initiatives that promote safety and concussion’s in youth football. Consequently, the change in approach by the NFL and the amount of funds given demonstrates that the NFL is now addressing CTE has a real problem and is looking to outside researchers to make advances in CTE research.
These findings are important because it could determine when a safe time would be for athletes returning to play in games after experiencing a brain injury. It increases the safety for those who participate in sports. Scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin want to continue their research, and they have been so successful that they are the winners of the Health Health Challenge, which is an award from General Electric and the NFL for developing faster and improved methods of treating
The confusion over the definition created problems for multicenter research programs. To be comfortable with the consistency of data coming from different locations, researchers ' projects began to identify mild traumatic brain injury
There were some prominent reports that accused corporate interest groups of playing down the information about concussions of former profession football players, and others claim was that the public health groups were playing it up. Organization and player support groups equally supported epidemiological investigations of the link between concussion and a deteriorating brain condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and both have partnered with respected medical foundations to study the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions (Harrison, 2014.
I was interested in hearing stories and experiences of those who struggled with drug addiction. I wondered if I would receive any insight regarding my family members who have suffered from drug addiction. Going into the meeting, I was prepared to introduce myself if necessary and did not hold feelings of anxiety regarding the potential necessity for introduction. Upon arrival, I noticed a big church with various entrances. I was unsure where to enter and did not want to enter into the wrong door.
Alan’s therapist, Crystal Mangir, also said “If Alan were in a wheelchair, or had a cast on his leg, people would understand that something happened… but no one can see a broken brain” (Crimmins 199). This mentality would show why after Alan regained his ability of movement, the insurance companies decided not to pay for Alan’s rehab therapy since he was no longer in need of therapy. After a traumatic brain injury it is very important to relearn the daily bases activity and in most cases physical therapy is the final step to complete physical recovery. This misunderstanding of brain injury was what Cathy Crimmins hoped to shed light on throughout this
After a person experiences a brain injury, it is not uncommon to hear them complain about balance and vision issues. That became the cases for a Minnesota woman who said that specialized glasses ended suffering that went on for years. Liz Renner, a familiar patient at the Hennepin County Medical Center, said that she had been walking across a street when a pickup truck hit her. The incident occurred more than 16 years before, but it left her with a lifelong struggle. While Renner does not remember a lot, the accident left her with a broken back, hip and a brain injury.
Ben Utecht once said, “We are the culmination of all we have experienced, all we have thought and read and believed, all we have loved. We are living memories” (Utecht 2016, pg. 9). In Utecht’s Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away, you can see that the idea of him losing his memory is a real possibility, and a lot of that can be attributed to the poor treatment of his concussions. Ben Utecht’s autobiography is an example of the significant role discourse plays in how medical injuries, physical and mental alike, are viewed and therefore cared for in both sports and day to day lifestyles. The minimized medicalization of concussions has led society to lack awareness in knowing the seriousness of a head injury and the steps that should be
This clinical experience has really helped me to sharpen my communication skills and realize just how important it is to understand mental health. We are told multiple times in class that mental health issues can be seen on any floor and that is the truth. I’ve seen patients in my older adult clinical on the pulmonary floor suffer from issues that range from anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression. Being able to understand how to approach people that suffer from these types of illnesses, allows us, the nurses, to give the patient the best care that we can. It helps to build a trusting relationship and get to know them on a personal level.
