The Existence
How do we know anything? That is question I keep asking myself. As I was reading chapter 2 Nagel, kept mentioning, “How do we know if we exist?” That all of the real world experiences we go through on the daily basis are just a figure to our imagination. That everything we see today is just our mind almost playing tricks on us. Nagel makes it seem as though we do not have a soul and in fact our mind is what’s keeping us somewhat human. The con of Nagel statements is if we’re actually in; example a lab, hooked up to wires and the only thing that is keeping us alive is our mind then what is a God. There would physically be no existing God. It’s almost like we humans made up the thought of God, just to keep us living or possibly

The idea that our lives were meant for God's purpose is supposed to give them their point. We aren’t supposed to ask, "What is the point of God?" Or even question the existence of God any more than one is supposed to ask, "What is the meaning of God?” Can there honestly be something which gives a point to everything else by inclosing it, but which couldn't have any point itself? If God is supposed to give our lives a meaning, that we can’t understand, it’s not much of a solace. God as fundamental explanation may be an unintelligent answer to a question that we can't get rid …show more content…
We wake up everyday going about our day, never actually noticing the patterns or the daily routines we go about. For me it would be; school, gym, homework, and then going to work on the weekends mostly. You never actually stopped and think about if we actually exist n that very moment. You just go about your day. But then you have one of those days and wonder what is life? I ask myself this a couple of times of a month because sometimes I feel lost. Nagel mentioned on page 101 “ If life is not real, life is not earnest, and the grave is its goal, perhaps it's ridiculous to take ourselves so seriously. On the other hand, if we can't help taking ourselves so seriously, perhaps we just have to put up with being ridiculous. Life may be not only meaningless, but
This quote that I will be analyzing and explaining why it is the key quote that represents the thesis of Nagel. Nagel’s main goal is to define consciousness and refute any reductive approach to consciousness. Nagel claims that consciousness is the reason why the mind-body problem is so difficult. Consciously being aware and cognizant is unexplainable because it is hard to reduce down to a single entity. The chosen quote is essentially saying that all organisms have conscious states and in order to truly be that organism or understand, you must understand their consciousness while still maintaining your own consciousness.
And since it is obvious there are clearly horrible things happening in the world, God does not exist. And the possibility that the evil occurs for a higher purpose of achieving a greater good is
Therefore, it is without ultimate significance.” Craig assumes that because the universe will die, a person’s life is insignificant and devoid of meaning. Though Craig states that man is lying to himself in an attempt to create meaning independent of God, he has not stated why a person’s own version of meaning is any less valid than one
Instead the belief revolves around the idea that natural causes are sufficient to explain everything that exists in the
The Puritan Plain Style uses simple writing to express the importance of God. In the poem From Preface to God’s Determination, Edward Taylor uses metaphors and similes to ask the reader a rhetorical question of who created the world. By comparing the creation of the earth to something that could be related to, he helps the reader understand what he is asking. The poem helps the reader understand the origin of world and of Christianity. Taylor uses rhymes throughout most of the poem to make the lines read smoothly.
Nagel proceeds to respond to his objections with the argument that goodness or evil of a subject depends on their possibility and history, not just their state. Because of this, subjects may succumb to misfortune even though they are not able to experience it themselves. Another reply to the objection that death is not bad is that if one dies, one is not able to experience any more goodness in life if one dies. A response to the question of why death is considered bad while our time before birth is not, is because the time after one dies that death takes away from us and this is not the case for the period of nonexistence pre-birth. At the end of the essay Nagel presents the question of whether the non-realization of further life is bad in all cases, or if this depends on what can be naturally hoped for in life.
Argument for the existence of god is being proposed in several ways. Some based on science while some are about personal experience and some on philosophical arguments such as ontological arguments, first cause arguments, arguments based on deign, moral arguments. Each of these support conception. Ontological argument say that if you inculcate the idea of god , we can see him . There is a saying that “Nothing comes from Nothing but something comes from something”.
Meaning of Life What is life? What is the meaning of our existence? These existential questions were asked by almost every individual alive at some point in their life. Over the years many philosophers have come up with individual explanations to why they believe life can be unreasonable, futile, the will of god, or just simply meaningless.
In Nagel’s “What Is It Like To Be a Bat?” he attempts to refute reductionism by stating that in order to understand the relationship between mind and body, one must address consciousness and reductionism fails to do that. Nagel lays strong emphasis on what he calls ‘subjective character of experience’ which states that everything has its own interpretation of what it is like to be themselves. Fundamentally, each organism has a unique subjective perspective and conscious experience that is only understandable from the organism’s point of view.
That is our choice the way we live our temporary life and the way we make it meaningful for ourselves What is the meaning of life? Why we exist here? What are we living for? These questions are asked, discussed and argued by many philosophers around the world to look for a significance of people’s living or existence in general.
(11). What is the point of life? This question wandered about in my head demanding an answer as I read the poem. Is life as simple as a short meal at a kitchen table? After reading “Perhaps the World Ends Here,” I am made aware of the answer to this very question.
What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment” (Frankl, p. 108). The meaning of life, when used as a general term, has a broad definition because of its ever-changing nature. However, the true definition of the meaning of life is supposed to be established on an individual basis. It’s the events going on in your personal life at that moment in time that defines what meaning is. “To put the question in general terms would be comparable to the question posed to a chess champion: ‘Tell me, Master, what is the best move in the world?’”
I remember when I was little girl and I would always ask myself what the meaning of life is and is they’re really a god. But I was never able to answer my own questions until now. I was born and raised in a Christian household and we was taught never to ask questions of that of nature or doubt our faith. The world is the way it is because that is how god made it.
So everything that we do, every action and decision that we make is in the assumption that there is something “good” to come of it because that is what we are all working and living for. The purpose and the function of our lives is more that just survival in a physical sense but of having a rational soul which means using our reason excellently. The only way for us to achieve true happiness is for us to develop our
Therefore, When we give meaning to our life, I believe we also have to be realistic and focus on our meaning for living and set concrete goals. If we set our meaning of life to becoming the biggest super model in the world yet you 're not working towards it or you just set an unrealistic goal. Then eventually that 's going to alter your life 's meaning and cause you to live in Denial, and unhappy. Our life 's meaning comes from within us it 's something we have to think hard
