Napoleon Bonaparte, a significant historical leader and dominant military general, is seen as the restorer of France after the initiation of the French Revolution in 1789. Napoleon Bonaparte was born August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. At a young age Napoleon attended the military college of Brienne where he studied for 5 years. Here his military interests were nurtured at a young age. Later on in 1785, Napoleon returned to Corsica for the death of his father Carlo Bonaparte. After pursuing his military passion Napoleon was appointed lieutenant of the fourth regiment of artillery and adopted an authoritarian role in the army in 1791. Due to a series of events that forced Napoleon and his family to flee Corsica, after having unresolved conflicts with the Corsican governor, Pasquale Paoli. Once Napoleon returned to France, he quickly reengaged his service with the French military and soon he became associated with the revolutionary leaders of the French Revolution, the Jacobins. The period of violence in France lead to an extreme dictatorship over the Committee of Safety, also known as the reign of terror. During this time Napoleon was promoted to a major general in the army. In 1792, France’s rebellious government had become engaged with many military conflicts with various European countries. In 1796, Napoleon lead a strong French army that defeated the larger armies of Austria, one of France’s primary rivals, in a series of battles in Italy. In 1797, France and Austria signed the Treaty of Campo Formino. This resulted in territorial gains for the French, which not only was beneficial for France, but it gave importance and a strong recognition to the young
