I can’t believe we are finally going camping. After months and months of trying to convince my boyfriend Alex to go camping, he has finally caved. We are currently packing at home getting our tent and gear ready to put in the backseat. As I sling myself into the passenger seat of his jeep wrangler, I feel the adventure awaiting us.
A few hours pass before we actually see the forest. We are now in Nevada California, a long way from our hometown of Los Angeles. The forest we are going to be in is Humboldt-Toiyabe, the third largest forest in the United States. “Lily!” Alex yells to me. “What?!” I yell back to him. “I’m actually excited! People out and about hiking have backpacks twice the size of ours. This makes both of us feel relieved. This is honestly the first time either of us have ever done something risky. Both of us are ex-Christian camp goers, were straight A students in highschool, and are currently attending UCLA. I still don’t know why we are doing what we are doing, but I couldn’t be more excited.
We slowly make our way into the woods. We begin walking on the path. A few hours pass and we become tired. We decide to go off the path to make our campground. We begin putting up our tent and unpacking our gear.
It is now 8pm and pitch black outside. Our tent is up, and we have a nice fire going. Alex and I haven’t had this much fun in a while. We are so excited for these next few days off grid.
We wake up to the sound of birds chirping and squirrels running. As we exit our tent we check our phones for the time and it is 7:30 am. To be completely honest it does feel pretty odd not having service. I am used to waking up and checking all forms of social media, but today that wasn’t
