“Why can’t we get into our freaking offense!?” This is all I really remember from Coach McKendrick at halftime last year against Niles North in what was a tough night for our basketball team. Prior to this, we beat New Trier at home and then went on the road and beat the pre-season unanimous vote to win conference, Highland Park, in our first conference game. Before the New Trier game, our game plan was simple: we were smaller, but faster, so we were going to run the court and make this is a fast pace game. We executed our gameplan, and we won.
Dr. Daniel Gould, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, in his essay “Are High School Sports Good For Kids?” argues that problems with high school sports are beginning to outway the benefits.. He supports his claim by providing evidence of how sports are beneficial to kids, explaining the problems within sports, and extending the importance of what creates a positive response from sports. Gould’s purpose is to inform coaches, principals, and parents about what makes sports beneficial and how to prevent the problems in order to allow kids to learn and become better citizens. He establishes an informative tone for coaches, principals, and parents.

The recruiting process for a high school athlete in 1985 would only receive letters from colleges the start of their junior year, not allowed to have actual contact with coaches until then. This was harder on some athletes that could play in college but did not get the exposer needed. Consequently the number of college athletes were not high with a lot of the players missing the opportunity to play. Today a lot more athletes have the chance to be able to play college sports, with the technology it allows for more visibility of stats and easier access to videos giving more opportunities for athletes to gain exposure with colleges. The rules of recruiting has slightly changed no longer having to wait till your junior year to receive letters and contact from coaches.
