Jonny would toss the ball to Owen and lift him up. It was easy for Owen to be lifted because he was so light. Owen would then dunk the ball through the rim of the hoop. It does not particularly seem logical, that two unathletic boys, who did not have any love for basketball, would spend hours and hours mastering “the shot”. The boys enjoyed “the shot,” but their main goal was to perfect it and be able to do it in two seconds.

As Robert Frost once said, “Two Roads Diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. Similar to Frost, the men’s basketball coach at St. Anthony’s High School, Robert Hurley, has taken the road less traveled by declining many professional coaching opportunities in order to remain a leader in his Jersey City Community. Flick’s Broken Dream “Ex-Basketball Player” is a poem by John Updike in which a former high school-athlete Flick Webb’s life has been described. Flick was a high-school basketball star but as he got older he couldn’t live his dream of becoming a basketball player, and instead became an attendant at a gas station, which was the furthest he could go with his career. This poem explains how life changes as one gets older and at times it doesn’t go exactly as we plan it, where Updike exemplifies many poetic devices of imagery, personification and metaphors.
