The public schools in North Carolina are faced with a huge number of challenges. One challenge is the significant difference between the black and the white students. This in return is accompanied by certain issues like the lack of African American studies in these schools. This results in a long traumatic consequences and standing concerns that have rippled through the educational system of the society. Few or little African American studies in this school have taken place over the public education systems that the parents and different systems of the black society have taken note of this. When going into the field of an Early Childhood Educator there are different values that one should have. In my opinion Early Childhood Educators should have foundation skills of how children learn, should know how to support diverse knowledge, should be able to model the correct language, should have classroom management skills, and should be able to create a safe environment for all children. Anyon article discussed students of different social class background is exposed to different types of educational knowledge. Anyon used four distinctive schools; working class, middle class, affluent and executive, located in New Jersey. The education the students received reflected the social class level. In the working class school, the principle had did not know the history of the school building. The teachers did not motive or believe in their student’s success. The school knowledge was based on facts and simple skills. Students was just given information without explanation or failed to make their own choices. America is known for its revolution and its civil war. The history of America is mostly painted in positive light, but many choose to ignore the negatives. African Americans prior to the 1950s did not fight back to their oppressor however, that quickly changed. The civil rights movement began in 1954 to confront the racial discrimination of African Americans here in the USA. Before these protests and marches occurred, and even during, African Americans were force to endure countless amounts of abuse and segregation from many public areas. The effects of the civil rights movement have changed the shape of American society immensely and many, not just African Americans, have benefited from the sacrifices of many.
June 7, 1892 Homer Plessy boarded a Louisiana train and as a black man chose to sit in the whites-only car. This was not the first time a black person broke the law to try to change it nor would it be the last. It was a particularly memorable incident because the term “separate but equal” came about and there was a negative impact on the lives of black Americans for many decades. Plessy was arrested for violating the Separate Car Act of 1890 and with the help of the Comite` des Citoyens, he hoped to change the world for black citizens in the United States. Unfortunately, John Howard Ferguson, then, later the United States Supreme Court got in Plessy’s way.
With every new president comes new appointees and with new appointees comes change. These new changes can radically affect how education will be affected. As of now, many DACA students worry for their future, Betsy DeVos plans to change public education and the future decision on transgender bathroom use can make an impact on education.
In the United States, there exists a gap in equality for different demographics of students. The factors contributing to educational disadvantages include socioeconomic struggles, gender of students, language or culture, and particularly for the scope of this paper, race. Racial inequality in education is predominant in black students and is perpetuated further by educators. A theory that explains this could be the “hidden curriculum” theory which conditions students to believe that their cultural backgrounds must be silenced to resemble the model white student. Studies show that training educators in cultural sensitivity and establishing trust between students and teachers allows students from varying cultural backgrounds to improve in classroom settings.
According to the 2011 ACS, (Automated Collection System), the median household income of Dane County’s African American families was $20,664, less than 1/3 the median income enjoyed by White families ($63,673). These statistics showed the problem of income disparity between black and white families. This income disparity might have negative impact in all domain of the black population life such as education, healthcare, etc.….
The deep rooted racism that effects African American students today. I know in 2017 that sentence sounds crazy. How do African American’s still experience racism, especially in schools, segregation is against the law? African Americans have the same access to the same types of education as anyone else. While at face value both statements are true, with a more in depth look they are false.
America is the so called “melting pot” of the world because it encompasses the diversity of ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, and traditional values. The American Dream is defined by equal rights, racial justice and the freedom to succeed through a variety of opportunities with the support of education as a imperative structure. Sadly, due to the mistreatment and isolation for many years, African Americans were prompted to fight for the unity of school systems. Many heroic leaders endlessly advocated to bring cultures together and create an integrated school system with the belief all children will go to school amongst each other no matter their skin color. In Brown v. Board of Education, the court’s decision ended with bringing together schools and integrating them to become equal. Unfortunately, still to this day, some schools continue to remain segregated even after all the courageous activists who passionately fought to bring peace amongst all races. Jonathan Kozol, an educator and activist who challenges equal opportunities in schools systems, has written many books based off his experience with children in many inner-city schools. In the article, “Still Separate, Still Unequal,” Kozol displays the ongoing issues of segregation amongst schools who continue to isolate African Americans and whites from going to school together.
For many years throughout American history individuals have fought greatly to gain equal rights. Women and African Americans struggled for equality for many years. Women gained their right to vote after the 19th amendment was passed in 1920. Women suffrage lasted for 70 years as they were struggling to gain equal voting rights as men. The women’s suffrage movement helped women all across America gain the right to vote. In the 1800s, African Americans were struggling to gain civil rights in public schools. African American students in schools were receiving separate but equal treatment. After several court cases, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and stated that "in the field of
Holtzmann’s Nuer Journeys, Nuer Lives deeply examines and compares how Sudanese refugees have assimilated into Minnesotan culture. After the Nuer came to the United States, many tried to form smaller communities as well as carry on traditions from Nuer culture. The Minnesotan Nuer lifestyle now accommodates Sudanese traditions through American practices; by using United States methods for their practices, the Nuer have found new ways of living in this country. While these Sudanese refugees have faced many difficulties with keeping steady incomes and finding appropriate academic institutions for their children, many of them have been able to form social groups and begin families. Family life, no matter how altered, will always lie at the core of Nuer interactions; and even though Minnesota has been a generally welcoming state for them, there is hope for the future that the Nuer will have equal opportunities to education and living in financial safety as their fellow white neighbours.
Another important thing in American society is equality, the belief that everyone should be given the opportunity to succeed. Americans have tried to structure their government to provide their citizens with equal access to education, financial aid, and support, so that everyone starts on the same footing. This allows those who work hard to succeed according to their own merits. Historically, there was a lot of inequality between different races, and genders. However, as the society progressed, Americans developed the belief that all men are created equal, as Althern mentioned. Nowadays, we have created programs and initiatives to help those who are disadvantaged, no matter their race or gender, earn an education by giving them access to technology and better resources. Also, community college are set up for the people who do not have enough money to go to University, and for those people who want to have second chance to study in their late age. The effort that American have demonstrated in reforming education shows just how much they value equality.
Maintaining cultural authenticity involves following the beliefs and values of your cultural group. Cultural authenticity is the everyday, accurate details of a specific cultural group’s lifestyle. A possibility may be a teacher may not recognize cultural norms, or may not understand the disciplinary style of a specific culture (222). An example of a race finding it difficult to maintain cultural authenticity in school is African Americans. African Americans students feel as if they need to act or portray themselves as “white” so teachers will give them the time of day and will take them seriously.
