The original inhabitants of North America were actually the first people to be subordinated by Europeans. The Native Americans who survived contact with the white people who landed in Plymouth Rock and other east coast locales were usually removed from their ancestral homes; usually far away from their homes (Schiffer, 2004). What we have written so far in this chapter about conceptualizing childhood applied mostly to European children and some American children. But how childhood was conceptualized in Native American tribes comes from either white settlers or missionaries – not from Native Americans themselves. It seems, however, that Native Americans children were handled permissively by their parents and not subjected to corporal punishment
The relationships between the three major settlers and the Native Americans differed in many ways. All the evidence needed is in the seven documents shown. Each of the documents provides insight to one of the three nationalities. It is fair to assume that the English were focused more on friendship, the Spanish set their eyes on the gold, and the French were insistent on converting the Native Americans to Christianity. Through the many challenges that they faced, they assisted in growing America into the place that it is today. Immigrants, Native Americans, Black Americans, and American Women faced many challenges, some of them had faced similar problems, and some had circumstances that were uniquely difficult. Immigrants were in search for one thing: a better life.
Around the 1800s, the United Stated government was trying to figure out a way to remove the Indian tribes such as the Seminole, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw from the southeast. Many American settlers wanted to remove the Indians there because they sawDuring President Jackson 's term of office, he signed the Indian Removal Act on May 28, 1830. This Indian Removal Act, President Jackson let to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. There were tribes that left their lands peacefully; however, many other Indian people refused to relocate. In the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839, one of the tribes known as Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the government.
The removal of the native Americans from their land, and the boarding school movement, which is when many native children were separated from their families, stripped from their language and often got abused by white. They lost their home, family because most American thought that Indian should integrated to their white culture, so it 'll be easier for them. The lost of family play a big impact in Native American life from generation to generation. Native America are still one of the United States most economically disadvantaged population. Not only that, most of their land are owned and managed by the federal government.

During the American Colonial period, the primary focus of colonists was to establish their own settlements in order to survive in the new continent. However, many of them believed that it was their responsibility to Christianize and civilize Native Americans. The educational institutions they established became the forerunners of the boarding schools which arose later in the 19th century both in the United States and in Canada (Stout 1). The aim of these schools was to resolve the so called “Indian-Problem” and to assimilate American Indians by separating Native children from their families and teaching them the American or the Canadian way of life (Trafzer, Keller and Sisquoc 14). Children in boarding schools were taught to be ashamed of and to reject their cultural heritage, ancestors and spiritual traditions (Chansonneuve 43).
Although Native Americans are characterized as both civilized and uncivilized in module one readings, their lifestyles and culture are observed to be civilized more often than not. The separate and distinct duties of men and women (Sigard, 1632) reveal a society that has defined roles and expectations based on gender. There are customs related to courtship (Le Clercq, 1691) that are similar to European cultures. Marriage was a recognized union amongst Native Americans, although not necessarily viewed as a serious, lifelong commitment like the Europeans (Heckewelder, 1819). Related to gender roles in Native American culture, Sigard writes of the Huron people that “Just as the men have their special occupation and understand wherein a man’s duty consists, so also the women and girls keep their place and perform quietly their little tasks and functions of service”.
The Legacy of the Historical Oppression of Native Americans To gain a true understanding of Native Americans and their culture, historians must not only examine the trials and tribulations Indians endured in the past, but also the contemporary issues the group faces. Currently, physical illnesses, psychological disorders, economic instability, and negative stereotypes continue to plague Native American communities. Popular sayings, like “Indians will be Indians” and “noble savages,” continue to haunt the culture. The use of the stereotypical Indian or “uncivilized savage” in toys, books, cars, foods, and sports teams, demonstrates how the American society is unfortunately accustomed to the prevalent stereotypes against Native Americans.
The author, Seybert provide an article informing the reader about Native American slaves’ and the series of events that occurred after the arrival of the Europeans. Before the Europeans arrived, some of the Native tribal groups would capture the Indian slaves and use them for small-scale labor and ritual sacrifice. Indian slaves were treated as if they were part of the Native American tribe. For example, The Creek treated both tribal members and slave children as if they were full members (Seybert, 1). Most importantly the Native Americans did not buy and sell the Indian captives, and if they did it was usually for peace gesture or an exchange of a member.
Native Americans were greatly affected by the expansion of the United States during the 1800s. As the U.S. moved west, they stole large amounts of Native American land by settling the land and killing the Natives who once lived there. Also during this time, their culture was being taken from them due to assimilation. While United States citizens were expanding into the west, many Native American lives were lost.
