Wealthy white men took advantage of this myth by raping their black female slaves in the antebellum era, taking away their sexual freedom. The actual reason that some black women willingly had sex with white men however, was due to the fact that they believed that sex with their wealthy white owners was the only way they were going to gain advantages in slavery. Estelle Freedman discusses in her text, “Contesting Rape of Black Women”, that the idea that all black women were hypersexual was still being used in the postbellum era by wealthy white men to continually justify the rape of these women. The wealthy white men felt intimidated that black women had begun to gain some freedom and wanted to tighten their control over them by continuing the Jezebel myth. Freedmen talks about this in her chapter when she explains how wealthy white men, "treated all black women as acceptable sexual outlets for what a northern journalist referred to as ‘the licentious passions of Southern white men.’ Rather than define their assaults as rape, these men presumed that black women either welcomed them or had no moral purity to defend” (Freedman
But of course, all these reasons for the invention of virginity pale in comparison to religion. It reinforced the other two origins of virginity and added the factor of shame. The Virgin Mary was idolized, and Eve was the bringer of sin upon man. Women were seen as seductresses that brought sin, and so they had to avoid temptation. A woman’s holy marriage represented her family’s honor, and so her “purity” was a highly valued commodity.
Roman law stated that women were not allowed to participate in certain activities because they were considered incompetent. Women were looked at as fragile, delicate people who could not provide or stand up for themselves. Since they were seen as incompetent, men did not see them worthy enough to make big decisions. “Roman law, as codified in the sixth century by Emperor Justinian, presupposes female incapability and is typified by a protective, paternalistic attitude. Such an approach tends to justify the exclusion of women from certain activities” (Kittell).
The “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” McIntosh begins her essay portraying the unwillingness of men to admit that they are over privileged. Even those who are willing to admit that women are at a disadvantage have a problem admitting their privilege. McIntosh realizes that this denial of privilege does not only apply to gender but to race as well. She realizes that white people including herself are thought to view racism as something that puts others at a disadvantage but have never had to considered an aspect of racism that befits them; white privilege. Although being a woman puts McIntosh at a disadvantage she realizes that by not acknowledging her privilege she is unintentionally oppressing others as well.
It’s no surprise, that Shakespeare’s Macbeth was clearly constructed as a rebellion against femininity roles of the time. During the Elizabethan era, women were raised to believe they were inferior to men since men obtained desired masculine qualities such as strength, and loyalty, whereas women were viewed as figures of hospitality (1; 6; 28-31). Obviously, not being tempted by the luxury of subservient women, William Shakespeare rebuked this twisted belief, applying that women deserve more respect than their kitchen tables. However, if transcending female expectations was used as a weapon than for good, is it still considered an act of femininity? Of course not!

Feminism is defined as the advocacy of women 's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes, but is this the way society sees feminism? While most people understand feminism as women 's rights and equality, while feminism is the equality of all sexes. Equality for all is means women that are raped won 't be asked what they were wearing because their bodies are overly sexualized and men that are raped won 't be told that they enjoyed it due to the idea that all men want is sex and these crimes will be treated these as real victim crime.To eliminate gender roles, allowing boys to freely enjoy sports seen as more girly such as ballet and to tell girls to know that it isn 't seen as bossy if they take control of a situation. Also to recognize those that don 't identify themselves as the male or female by opening unisex restrooms in all establishments.These are just the few examples of how it would be if the sexes were perfectly equal, but the idea of equality for all sexes wasn 't always popular back then.
