The NMNH opened with its gallery on “An Introduction to Natural History”. With the help of 67 interesting exhibit the gallery portrays the origin and evolution of life on earth and also gives us a glimpse of the variety of Indian flora and fauna. The major sections of the gallery are on Universe and Solar system, origin of life, life through the ages, fossils and evolution, mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes, invertebrates, plant kingdom, endangered animals, and Manmade crisis. The Biological Museum is situated at the premises of Manipur Zoological Garden in Imphal. The museum was inaugurated by Shri R.K. Jaichandra Singh, the then Chief Minister of Manipur on 1st October, 1988. Since then, it is managed by the Forest Department of Manipur. This biological museum, which is basically a natural history museum, houses twenty specimens. Major attraction of the museum are specimens of Tragopan birds, golden Tiger, and brown-antlered deer Sangai, found only in Manipur. In 2014, Shri B.S. Yogendra, having a background of Museology, was the Scientist-in-charge of the museum. Every year the museum needs maintenance cost worth rupees 120 lakh (approximately) to keep its galleries in well shape, updated and attractive. The museum is visited by 80,000 to 90,000 people every year.
