Shortly thereafter, the dead person was identified as twenty-four-year-old Chris McCandless, who was from an affluent family in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. A tragic story, with a mix of a young man, his well-off background, and happening in the most precarious but highly noble place, always had an emotional pull on people’s minds and stirred up people’s curiosity and perplexity. Sherman Alexie employs the literal strategy of using hyperboles to exemplify the internal struggles that Zits faces as a young teenager within the foster care system, as well as to bring a sense of lightheartedness to his insecurities as a young teen in a quest to discover identity. In the novel, Alexie states, “I can’t even count the milky way on my back. There are billions and billions of of those pimple-stars. I bet I could sell the rights to name each of them. Maybe I’ll stand at a freeway exit and shout at all of those lonely commuters: Back zits for sale!
In the novel, As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner shapes the plot based on the looming presence of the absentee protagonist, Addie Bundren. The reader’s knowledge of Addie accumulates through the monologues of other characters, so the reader gains only bits and pieces of Addie’s character. However, after her death, the reader obtains a better understanding of Addie’s voice through her own monologue and as a result, is characterized as cold and selfish. Through the use of similes and interior monologue, Faulkner shows Addie’s tendency to detach herself from the people in her life, which relates to the novel’s overall theme of solitude as Addie adheres to her father’s philosophy that the reason for living is no more than “to get ready to stay dead a long time” (169).
Throughout society, violence has been expressed in several different ways. Violence is a behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Indian Killer is a novel written by Sherman Alexie that connects society and everyday life situations. There are different forms of violence in Indian Killer such as physical, psychological, and emotional violence, which leads to anger, revenge, killing, and hate. One of the more interesting subjects that Alexie points out, that every individual or family may face in society is racial violence.
Anthony Gonzalez Mr. Alvarez English 11 March 27, 2023 Into The Wild Surviving is one thing, but burning your money and never seeing your family again is a whole other level. In the story “Death of an Innocent” by Jon Krakauer, the protagonist made a life changing moment in his adventure. This moment created a space between him and his family which ended up making him unable to see his family again. Throughout the story, the protagonist makes certain decisions in which are questionable and had the cost of losing his own life.
Over the course of this semester we have read, analyzed and discussed many different works. Two themes that stuck out to me, from my favorite pieces, were “society makes people who they are” and “nature.” I chose the works, “The Sculptor’s Funeral” by Willa Cather and “The White Troops Had Their Orders” by Gwendolyn Brooks, “Lullaby” by Leslie Marmon Silko and Emily Dickinson’s poems, “122 [130]” and “320 [258]." In “The Sculptor’s Funeral,” Cather shows that even though Harvey Merrick’s “loved ones” are gathered for his funeral, most of them are making fun of him because they couldn’t change him like they did the rest of the “kids.”
Faulkner composites a family that is far away from perfect, instead the family members each face a tribulation that connects to the death their mother. With the supporting passages Faulkner demonstrates how the novel, As I Lay Dying fulfill his own vision of the writer’s duty, which is to express the problems by appealing to pathos, introducing relatable problems, and discussing family dynamics. Faulkner fulfills the writer’s duty by introducing problems the writers can relate to. Faulkner inspires readers to write about, “problems of the human heart... with itself which can make good writing...because that is only worth the sweat agony” (Faulkner 14-15).

Laurie Halse Anderson’s historical fiction book, Fever 1793, takes place in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the story of Matilda Cook (Mattie) and her family, and the hardships they go through in the time period when Yellow Fever had struck. In the book, it teaches that during tough times, it is important to step up and take charge. This can be seen through the impact on the characters and author’s craft.
The speaker discloses that his children have been “gathered like a small cloud [and have become] . . . steam weeping on the window” (ll. 32-35). The speaker uses this final comparison of his children to weeping clouds to convince his grandpa that his life is not irredeemable and his presence is still needed in this world. In conclusion, through Gary Soto’s usage of powerful imagery, precise descriptions, and an absence of rhythm, he evokes a sense of sympathy for the community where he grew up while telling a beautiful story.
Christopher McCandless, the protagonist of the novel and film Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, is not your average guy. Driven by his minimalist ideals and hate for society, he challenged the status quo and embarked on a journey that eventually lead to his unforeseen demise. A tragic hero, defined by esteemed writer, Arthur Miller, is a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on tragedy. Christopher McCandless fulfills the role of Miller’s tragic hero due to the fact that his tragic flaw of minimalism and aversion towards society had lead him to his death.
Stories are the foundation of relationships. They represent the shared lessons, the memories, and the feelings between people. But often times, those stories are mistakenly left unspoken; often times, the weight of the impending future mutes the stories, and what remains is nothing more than self-destructive questions and emotions that “add up to silence” (Lee. 23). In “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, Lee uses economic imagery of the transient present and the inevitable and fear-igniting future, a third person omniscient point of view that shifts between the father’s and son’s perspective and between the present and future, and emotional diction to depict the undying love between a father and a son shadowed by the fear of change and to illuminate the damage caused by silence and the differences between childhood and adulthood perception. “A Story” is essentially a pencil sketch of the juxtaposition between the father’s biggest fear and the beautiful present he is unable to enjoy.
My writing of these incidents in this location, time, language, and manner, are solely credited to my family’s life-changing decision to travel to the unfamiliar land of America. This unforgettable experience signifies the detachment from my closest and most loved family, which I yearn to be with to this day. Writer Sherman Alexie has a knack of intertwining his own problematic biographical experience with his unique stories and no more than “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” demonstrates that. Alexie laced a story about an Indian man living in Spokane who reflects back on his struggles in life from a previous relationship, alcoholism, racism and even the isolation he’s dealt with by living off the reservation. Alexie has the ability to use symbolism throughout his tale by associating the title’s infamy of two different ethnic characters and interlinking it with the narrator experience between trying to fit into a more society apart from his own cultural background. However, within the words themselves, Alexie has created themes that surround despair around his character however he illuminates on resilience and alcoholism throughout this tale.
