Kaylin Durley Ms. Ashmore ENG1D June 12, 2023 The texts that are being investigated in the essay are the books Long Way Down and Peak. The types of conflicts that are being examined throughout this essay are person vs self and person vs nature conflicts. These obstacles are important throughout the text because it adds interest and enjoyment throughout the story. The story Peak is based on a fourteen year old boy who attempts to climb to the summit of Mount Everest. After changing his life by moving to Nepal with his dad, he was climbing with the goal of being the youngest person to reach the summit and bear more attention to his dad's company. Throughout this book, a lot of person vs nature conflict is explored through the text and is …show more content…

This proves it is a person vs nature conflict because the wind was so strong it was causing the characters to feel nervous and struggle going up the mountain. Another example of person vs nature conflict is shown through the setting when the characters had limited access to oxygen due to the high altitudes. At one point Peak was thinking, “If they were anything like me when I was up there, they would be lying in their sleeping bags wondering if there was enough air to keep them alive through the night.” (Smith, 211). This shows it is a person vs nature conflict because climbing up the mountain is already hard so the lack of oxygen makes it almost impossible. The first implication of person vs self conflict is shown through Metaphor. Within the book, I found the quote “But the worst part, the absolute worst part, is the constant slipping of your tongue into the new empty space, where you know a tooth is supposed to be but ain’t no more” (Reynolds, 30). This quote justifies that Will feels like a piece of him is missing and he can’t stop thinking about the negative emotions that come with his brother’s death. Another way person vs self conflict within Will is demonstrated is by using personification. The text read “Sleep ran from me for what seemed like forever, hid from me like I used to hide from Shawn before finally peeking out from behind pain” (Reynolds, 61). This quote clarifies that he was having difficulty falling asleep and when he finally fell asleep, he was falling asleep in mental pain. The concluding way person vs self conflict is demonstrated in this text is through simile. The author stated, “In the mirror my face sagged, like sadness trying to pull the skin off (Reynolds, 65)”. This quote explains that Will had such a big frown that the
