Compared to traditional bullying, girls may be relatively more involved but gender differences remain inconsistent across studies, probably due to different samples, methodologies (definitions, and types of cyberbullying assessed) and historical changes (such as increased use of social networking in girls especially; Patchin & Hinduja, 2010). Examples can be found of boys being more involved than girls (e.g., Calvete, Orue, Estévez, Villardón, & Padilla, 2010; Fanti, Demetriou, & Hawa, 2012; Salmivalli & Pöyhönen, 2012). However, there may be relatively greater involvement of girls in cyberbullying, just as there is in relational bullying, when compared to traditional physical (mainly boys) or verbal bullying (Smith, 2012).
