INTRODUCTION South Indian classical music in the form of Carnatic Music along with the traditional dance form of Tamil Nadu, Bharatnatyam, confers mystical divinity to the land of Chennai. The Dance and Music Festival, commonly known as the 'Margazhi Festival of Dance and Music ' is a tradition of cultural festive season of madras. Chennai Music Season is an event hosted every December–January in the Chennai. Spanning some six weeks, a number of large and small kutcheris (Carnatic music concerts) are performed by highly competent musicians. The traditional role of the Music Season is to allow the fans of Carnatic music to appreciate performances by renowned artists, and to allow promising young artists to display their talent and skill.
Which means that it is believed that the Khmer traditional dance is connected by a long tradition to the dance practiced in the court of the angkorien monarchs, which in turn were inspired by the Apsara mythology. The influences on music and dance came from India, through Thailand and Indonesia. In the Apsara dance, the women dressed in brightly colored costumes with elaborate headdresses, make gentle and graceful moves which are accompanied by a set of percussion instruments called Pin Peat. At the ceremony, along with the bride, all the other women in the family also get mehndi applied by the mehndi artist. The ceremony is accompanied by songs and dance.
Other types of important knowledge that the island astronomers have recorded are seasonal changes, such as monsoon season and dry season. In order to explain all of this information, and for it to be retained for generations; a series of dances and song were created. Various costumes and prop are used to further cement the important knowledge being shared. These props are called “dance machines”. These dance machines are used to mimic the movement of various celestial bodies, or demonstrate how constellations have an effect on seasonal changes, among other uses.
The music here can be sung either by the dancer or supporting musicians. But now, singing is usually done by supporting musicians. Music of the Indian dance sounds complicated as the beats changes occasionally. For instance, it could be from beats of nine, to three, to five. The ensemble usually involves a vocalist,flutist a conductor, percussionist and a mridangam(drummer).
