1). I think consumer culture is an important part of life for some countries, such as the United States. Consumer culture is nice because it provides sort of ‘luxury’ items to people and allows people to pursue interests and own items they desire that aren’t really needed to survive. People are able to use their money to buy items that they personally want, which often makes people happy. I think the negative side of consumer culture is that people get too focused on owning these items that they don’t really need, and often people waste their money on random items instead of necessities. Consumer culture also contributes to a large use (and waste) of natural resources, which many smaller, less developed countries lack. Though consumer culture is nice and is sort of a way to signify that people in a country are doing well, it also seems a little unfair when you look at how many countries don’t even have enough resources to help their people survive, meanwhile a large country is using all …show more content…

Potential consequences of America being so focused on consumption is how many natural resources are being used up to fuel this consumer culture, rather than being used on things that are needed to sustain life, or to help developing countries. The waste that is built up from this waste of natural resources is big as well, and this consumption of items harms the Earth. Another consequence is that Americans are more concerned with consumer culture and buying items they want rather than need, and putting money into this consumer culture instead of contributing to areas of the country that actually need money and need help to support people. The idea that how much you own, or consume, distinguishes those who are successful and those who are not is also a consequence, in my opinion, and hurts those who are less fortunate because they can not afford to participate heavily in this consumer culture, which causes those who can to look down upon those with less money and creates
