There are parts of social media that spark curiosities every day. For example, what are the benefits and disadvantages of social media? Social media apps have affected the human race so much, but how? How has it changed society? There so many facts about social media that we accept without learning them.
Although that is true, it also deterrents face to face socializing. This occurs due to society spending more than half of its time on social media. Social media is detrimental to society because of bullying as well as lack of interaction and physical activity, along with online hackers. To start, one may get cyber bullied, which is bullying over the internet. Others believe that it is easier to socialize and make friends.
Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter can cause teens to fall into these negative situations. These are some of the reasons why I think social media has harmful effects on today’s youth. First off, social media can lower an abundant amount of teens self-confidence. One example of this is cyberbullying. Teens can post anything to the public to damage one’s self confidence.
This is the case I agree with Social media also has a good side. It is said by Melissa Healy in her article “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” that teens that use social media the most are the most psychologically healthy. Teenagers also use social media to keep in touch with friends and family, not to interact with strangers according to Melissa Healy. Finally, teens use teens in ways that are not harming them. They use it to collaborate with friends and family when they need it.
Studies on how Instagram effects our emotional states are limited. However recent studies have found that other social networking sites, namely Facebook are prone to provoke envious feelings. The attributes of Facebook that invoke envy is said to be photographs, likes and comments. According to researches more, photographs are the most prominent factor that drives envious feelings. Thus it is tempting to hypothesis those effect from the Facebook study due to the fact that many of the activities in Facebook; photographs, likes and comments are highly correlated with Instagram.
Although social media may have change the world for the better, it may also cause distraction to students, it changes the way they interact with others and it causes psychological changes or other health problems.
