Body image is defined as “one 's subjective perception of one 's physical appearance” (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/body+image). One’s self body image can be affected by many factors and the rate in which the person would be affected depends on different parameters such as age, culture and gender. Positive body image is when a person has a real idea of his or her body and feels confident in it. Negative body image indicates that a person is dissatisfied with his body shape and feels uncomfortable with his body. In this essay, theories that explain how magazine portrayals of ideal bodies affect adolescents will be examined. Furthermore, throughout the essay gender and cultural differences will be discussed. Before the analysis, positive, negative and ways of measuring body image should be explained as well as why body image is important. Positive body image is when a person has a real idea of his or her body and feels confident in it. Body image can be measured by questionnaires and surveys the results of which show the rate at which the person is satisfied with his body.
