Video games are one of the most common tools used for entertainment today amongst children. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the estimated percentage of players in the United State of America (USA) is 59 and approximately 29 percent of the players are under 18 years old. Throughout the years, video games have developed and became easier to work with and to access. The increasing number of video games and the availability of video games everywhere make parents worried about the effects of video games on their children since they constitute the highest percentage of usage among different age groups. The negative effect of video games is that they alter certain regions of the brain. According to a research mentioned by Alice Park, a recent study explored how video games alter the brain functioning among young adult. In the study, 28 students participated, and they were told to play either a violent video game or a non-violent game every day for a whole week. To explore the effects of video games on the young adults’ brains, researchers used functional MRI to scan their brains while the children were busy trying to complete the objectives in the lab that were related to emotional and non-emotional tasks. Researchers found out that those participants who played violent video games illustrated less activity in the regions of the brain that were associated with emotions and attention. Other tests conducted by the experiment include how children face violent and non-violent words. According to the research, “participants were presented with violent words such as hit, harm and kill and non-violent words like run, walk and talk”. (Park, 2011, pg. 1) After the test was completed, researchers noticed that young adults who played non- violent video games reacted more emotionally after facing violent words. The pro-social games focus on helping other characters in the game. For example, zombie games in which we help other people survive from zombies can be a pro-social game. People always think that when children play video games, they become socially isolated and spend their time playing alone. However, according to ESA 2014, 42% of gamers play with friends and 32% of them play with family members. Children will not only be able to help the other characters, they will also learn how to help them. According to Prot et al. (2012), pro-social non-violent content decreases aggressive feelings, promotes helping behavior and enhances sympathy. The feeling of sympathy towards other people is important, because when feeling sympathy, children will try to put themselves in people’s situations so that children can feel their pain. When children develop such behaviors that are related to collaboration and helping, they can contribute to a better society. Since children are the future, they should learn these behaviors to promote these values to the next
