Crude oil, petroleum and all of the byproducts produced, are crucial to our country. Because of the rapid gain in population, supply and demand have a much larger goal to meet. The demand for crude oil in the United States alone will be up to 11.27 million barrels per day by 2019. Drilling sites for petroleum have been found to be very beneficial to this country. Due to the high demand, operations are able to provide market ready crude oil and byproducts. All petroleum drilling sites and refining sites are very confined. As for the environment, these operations are beneficial in the advances of exploration, production, transportation and all help reduce the negative effects petroleum may cause. The waste that is produced during the development …show more content…

The uses and benefits of produced crude oil are endless and we use each and everyone of them daily. Once crude oil is extracted from the ground, the oil undergoes distillation which is the beginning of creating by products (steemit 1). The largest share of by products made from crude oil is; jet fuel, gas, diesel and heating oils. Heavier products in oil that are not pulled out are turned into; tar, asphalt, paraffin wax and lubricating oils (steemit 1). These products have changed the quality of life for Americans and people around the globe. Crude oil must be transported and refined into petroleum products to have any value. The first process is distillation. Crude oil is heated and fed into a distillation column. As the temperature rises in the column, the oil begins to separate itself into components; they are then pulled out separately depending on which temperature the components boiled at. The second process is called cracking and reforming. Cracking is typically used to produce gas and jet fuel from heavier gasoils. Reforming is used to produce gas but is pulled out of lower-value oil. The final production of petroleum differs between refineries. The general goal in U.S. oil refineries is to produce as much gasoline as possible. Refining crude oil into the by products we rely on daily, is very beneficial considering the environmental tolls and disadvantages it has on the …show more content…

Given the high demand our society has for crude oil, it is very unlikely drilling will dissipate in the future. It is more likely drilling will increase to meet our demands. The EPA has strict regulations that rigs must follow to lessen the negative effects drilling had on our environment. Sometimes things go wrong, or regulations are ignored and not followed; spills occur and then our environment does suffer many months and sometimes years of devastation as a result. The positive effects of drilling; pollutants are safely managed and taken care of, the benefits of petroleum and the by products it provides. As with most facets in life, we take the good with the bad. As a society, we have become so dependant simply on oil and its by products, drilling simply will not dissipate due to the effects it brings to the
