Crude oil, petroleum and all of the byproducts produced, are crucial to our country. Because of the rapid gain in population, supply and demand have a much larger goal to meet. The demand for crude oil in the United States alone will be up to 11.27 million barrels per day by 2019. Drilling sites for petroleum have been found to be very beneficial to this country. Due to the high demand, operations are able to provide market ready crude oil and byproducts. All petroleum drilling sites and refining sites are very confined. As for the environment, these operations are beneficial in the advances of exploration, production, transportation and all help reduce the negative effects petroleum may cause. The waste that is produced during the development …show more content…
The uses and benefits of produced crude oil are endless and we use each and everyone of them daily. Once crude oil is extracted from the ground, the oil undergoes distillation which is the beginning of creating by products (steemit 1). The largest share of by products made from crude oil is; jet fuel, gas, diesel and heating oils. Heavier products in oil that are not pulled out are turned into; tar, asphalt, paraffin wax and lubricating oils (steemit 1). These products have changed the quality of life for Americans and people around the globe. Crude oil must be transported and refined into petroleum products to have any value. The first process is distillation. Crude oil is heated and fed into a distillation column. As the temperature rises in the column, the oil begins to separate itself into components; they are then pulled out separately depending on which temperature the components boiled at. The second process is called cracking and reforming. Cracking is typically used to produce gas and jet fuel from heavier gasoils. Reforming is used to produce gas but is pulled out of lower-value oil. The final production of petroleum differs between refineries. The general goal in U.S. oil refineries is to produce as much gasoline as possible. Refining crude oil into the by products we rely on daily, is very beneficial considering the environmental tolls and disadvantages it has on the …show more content…
Given the high demand our society has for crude oil, it is very unlikely drilling will dissipate in the future. It is more likely drilling will increase to meet our demands. The EPA has strict regulations that rigs must follow to lessen the negative effects drilling had on our environment. Sometimes things go wrong, or regulations are ignored and not followed; spills occur and then our environment does suffer many months and sometimes years of devastation as a result. The positive effects of drilling; pollutants are safely managed and taken care of, the benefits of petroleum and the by products it provides. As with most facets in life, we take the good with the bad. As a society, we have become so dependant simply on oil and its by products, drilling simply will not dissipate due to the effects it brings to the
The U.S. uses 25% to 30% of the oil produced in the world, yet has less than 3% of known oil reserves,” (Doc C Paragraph 3).This is important because if becoming self-sufficient is impossible than is drilling even worth
Along with creating new jobs, the Dakota Pipeline transports crude oil. We should continue construction of the Dakota Pipeline is to increase production of crude oil. Our country uses more crude oil than any other country. We need to bring our production of crude oil higher than our consuming rate. If we continue to use more crude oil than make it, our country will depend more and more on foreign oil when we should be relying on ourselves.
While drilling, the oil can also pollute the ocean. Everyone is asking ‘Should The United States should Drill for Oil in Alaskan Wilderness?’ The best way to sort this out is by looking at the Economic factors, Environmental Factors, and Other Factors. Drilling in Alaskan wilderness would cause economic problems.
Boom or Bust Just a few years ago Williston, North Dakota, was a quiet small town, with a population of around 12,000. Due to the oil prices and drilling, Williston is America’s biggest oil boom and had over 40,000 residents. The oil boom has caused many problems in North Dakota such as increasing the crime and social problems, housing and roads. There is a lot of wear and tear on the roads, because of the thousands of trucks that are hauling oil, water and other fracking components. According to the Department of Transportation, the state has invested $1.16 billion into the roads.
Offshore Drilling Every year, in the United States alone, 565 million barrels or oil are extracted as a result of offshore drilling; totaling a startling amount of roughly 1.5 million barrels a day. Consequently, these threatening practices are negatively impacting marine mammals, sea birds, sea turtles, and fish. Although drilling offshore provides access to expensive resources such as oil, it heavily contributes to the extinction and endangerment of animals, and the disruption of marine ecosystems, thus these practices should be prohibited and viewed as unethical. To begin, new techniques of horizontal drilling allow for even greater amounts of oil to be extracted from a single well, producing problems in infrastructure on land.
In recent years there has been a big issue on fracking in Oklahoma. This is an issue that only continues to get worse. The oil company, , by residents has been blamed for many of these earthquakes. Within the past month, there have been more and more issues. In Edmond Oklahoma, there was a big earthquake, which provoked residents to sue the company for $28 million in damages.
By fracking for natural gas and shifting from coal to natural gas power generation plants, we could benefit economically, save our environment, and save millions of gallons of
Hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as “fracking,” by definition, means the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground thousands of feet deep, at a high pressure; in order to fracture shale rocks to release the natural gases inside (Schrope n.d.). A more adequate explanation on to why we perform the method of “fracking” is that it is an easier process to obtain the natural gases inside the rocks. These natural gases are used for many sources of energy throughout the world. Natural gases have also been proven to be more cleaner and more efficient source than coal. The process of fracking involves drilling through deep wells into the shale rocks which breaks up the rock shales releasing these natural gases.
The process of fracking allows humans to extract the colorless, shapeless and odorless gas and oil when it is in its original form, which is later on used for electric power, in industries, in vehicles and in other important worldwide makings. Finally, the significance of fracking in the United States has clearly become leading to macroeconomists to state that the country is changing from a “net importer” to a “net exporter” of oil and gas over the coming years. Table 1: " What Is Fracking and Why Is It Controversial? - BBC News.
People complain about pollution from factories, cars, global warming, and the melting of polar ice caps, yet many people disregard the dangerous that come with fracking. Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, and/or boreholes to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. Fracking is causing an epidemic economically and environmentally. Fracking is continuously destroying the earth day by day. From the endless fracking today’s economy is depleting.
Fracking is one of the best ways to get natural resources. “Fracking is a process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside” (Unknown). Adversaries of fracking will say that it is dangerous, use up our water supply, and poison our water supply, but that is not totally true, fracking will bring in more money, save money, and will make the air cleaner and safer. Fracking may seem unacceptable because of what people say about it, however, when they drill deep into the facts they will see that fracking is actually very beneficial. Fracking will bring in tons of money for all of the United States.
Fracking is the process of pumping different liquids into the ground at high pressure to create fractures, cracks, and fissures in the rock so oil or gas can be extracted. The companies involved in the fracking industry are forced to stop extracting gas. This is because there has been a moratorium placed on Hydraulic Fracturing until further notice. A moratorium is a temporary prohibition of an activity. This means that companies that depend their earnings solely on fracking are failing.
The gas (gasoline) division is advance cultured and through an assortment of procedures is changed over into the fuel we control our autos with, warmth homes, and cook our nourishment. Certain parts of the gas division are evacuated (depentanized) and others have their substance structure changed (isomerized). A couple dirtying impacts are cleared (desulfurized), and others have portions added to convey the last thing (reformulated fuel).
Bio-diesel production yields undesirable by-products for example methanol and glycerin. These by-products are removed so that the bio-diesel is suitable for use. Fractional distillation is used in the essential oil, flavor and fragrance industry. Raw essential oils are extracted from different plants such as mint, clove and tee tree for example. These raw oils contains impurities that have a bad flavour or odor.
Throughout our planet’s history, human rights have been violated countless times, and very little efforts have been made to address these violations and protect the people’s rights. When greed grips on to people, they seem to forget all that is ethical. They are willing to sacrifice the lives of others for their own personal gain. Human rights violations in Nigeria are a perfect example of this. Oil companies have failed to respond to numerous cases of human rights abuses in the region.
