With over seven billion people in the world, the Earth is suffering from the destruction humans have caused. Overpopulation is caused by exceeding the carrying capacity and has affected many different countries. By damaging and upsetting the stability of the world, the environment is affected in many different ways. Also, it becomes challenging for undeveloped nations to find alternative methods of production, due to the inadequate amount of resources available. Altogether, overcrowding negatively affects the environment. Overpopulation causes habitat loss, increases the rate of extinction, decreases the amount of fresh water available, and limits natural resources.

As the population increases, the amount of fresh water consumed increases as well. This is mainly a result of water being used for irrigation, in factories, and to support daily needs. However, the amount of water being consumed per person has been increasing over time. Authors of the book, Population, Resources, Environment, Paul and Anne Ehrlich write, “1,500 gallons were used per person in 1960 and 2000 gallons was used per person in 1980. These numbers are still increasing” (Ehrlich). While some have the opportunities to use this much water, other countries are lacking as water levels are dropping. Despite the stupendous amount of water used per person in some areas, water scarcity is everywhere. As stated in the article Overpopulation, “Freshwater supplies dwindle every year and water scarcity affects one in three people on every continent” ("Overpopulation."). As explained in the previous topics, as the population increases, the demand for food increases. Irrigation uses the majority of the fresh water supply all over the world. Although, there are methods for decreasing the amount of water used on crops. For example, techniques such as drip irrigation, which drips the water directly onto the root of the plant. But not everyone adopts or is aware of this method. Also with the amount of fresh water being used to keep factories running, it is not shocking how much is being used. As stated in the text, “Water consumption will rise more than 40 percent by 2035 if population growth continues as it has been” ("Overpopulation."). If the human population continues to grow at this rate, especially in nations with enormous numbers, the percentage of water consumption will rise at an alarming rate. In the article of the week The Wrong Way to “Think about California Water” by Michael Hiltzik, Hiltzik explains why we are thinking about California's water the wrong way. He gives several reasons why we are thinking about California's drought the wrong way that seem to significant , but my family can cut back on water usage using these same principles. First, even when he said that water bottles are not the significant causes of water usage they still are a portion of that water usage. A way we could save water is to finish all that water, drink only when we're thirsty, and give any leftover water to the plants, making it a double win. Another way we could save water is to use more drought resistant plants, or fake plants.

The maximized demands on resources led to conflict and scarcity. The increased demand for housing, food, and other goods led to price increases and economic problems.
But at the same time farmers should have a limit of water they can waste for their needs. There are some farmers that have dams that they own,so pretty much they can open the river when they want and the water will flow in a river for the animals to drink. I think that’s a waste of water because the water flows everyday and it just goes to waste. Some farmers might say that they need the water, that how are they just going to let more than 100 cows die. I think those people just care about the money, because it only helps their needs.

The environment has been destroyed by human pollution and is depleted of natural resources due to the sheer amount of materials needed to support such a large population. Stop Taking Clean Water for Granted Can you stop for a moment and think what would happen if we didn’t have water; clean water? It seems impossible, as we use water to drink, cook, clean, grow things, and for everything else in life. Unfortunately, because of the easy access to one of the most plentiful, and most valuable resources in the world, some people take water for granted.
