University students use social networking sites as a way to communicate, these sites have led to an immense increase in communication worldwide. For the purpose of this paper Facebook will be used to represent all online social networking sites. There are both positives and negatives that come with increased communication in the social networking era, although, the positives outweigh the negatives. As a result of more and more communication on Facebook, university students are able to preserve existing connections, as well as, make new worldwide connections, and share personal information easily, consequently, this increased communication has led to social networking addiction in some cases.
Through the use of social networking university students are able to stay in touch with friends and family that live elsewhere and create new connections. As Facebook continues to grow, students are able to get in touch with almost anyone around the world. Many students fear that they will lose contact with their close friends from high school once they begin their post-secondary education. Facebook has allowed for students to stay in touch with these friends from high school that they may have lost contact with due to university (Ellison 1148). Now students are able to constantly feel connected to their friends as well as their family without having to be in the same community.
