Some people prefer that social media have some good effects for children, while others believe that social media only can harm children. In the ultimate analysis. Actually, on balance analysis, I agree that social media causes bad effects for teenager because social media take up a lot of time for children to study, and have a bad influence on the development of their body and mind health. Parents wonder if their children’s constant use of Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat is healthy. Teenagers talk about the pressure to post the perfect photo or to compete with the perfect lives their friends present on the Internet.
Studies show a correlation between increased social media usage and depression and this can be of many reasons; first of is cyber-bullying. Many teenagers have been a victim of cyber-bullying and this is increasing, as bullies on social media don’t realize the damage of their words and actions as it is online. Many teenagers believe that what they say on social platforms doesn’t really matter, but what truly matters is what is said in face-to-face interactions. This is because people cannot see what’s happening on the other end of the screen therefore they post mean comments not realizing the damage they have done. The American College of Pediatricians “The Media, Children, and Adolescents” stated that “over half of adolescents state they have been bullied online and over 25 percent of adolescents state they have been bullied repeatedly through internet or on cell phones.” Secondly, when teenagers go on social platforms they compare their lives to filtered and unrealistic posts of their peers, this leads to envy of others and tends to produce feelings of depression which then transforms into major depression.
Although social media can be the number one activity on the web, the media is designed to be addictive. According to Immprovement Pill, "Social media gives you a false sense of accomplishment." This tells us that social media is an addictive source and can make you experience false things and feelings. Another example is that teens spend almost as much as 2 hours and 20 minutes per day on these social networks Such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. This can impact their mood, emotions, and the way they use their time.
Now a days, you can see people of all ages tapping away at their electronics. They are always using social media or other things, but most importantly, social media. According to “Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such a Bad Idea” by Melissa Healy and “Antisocial Media” by Hilary Stout, They both talked about social media taking over the lives of children. They also describe how children cannot develop empathy for others or understand different emotions. How I feel about social media is that it is not good for children to use because it can affect them in the future.
Per research on teen social media use done by Indiana University, “... the participants’ personality scores reflected the observer ratings better than the idealized self-descriptions.” (Herring & Kapidzic 7). This data proves that teens use social media to project a different image of themselves to impress viewers or followers. Moreover, teens in middle school are impressionable, and so they should be more constructively monitored when using technology. One way to prevent cyberbullying in middle
Over the last ten years, with the growth of technology and the Internet, social media websites gradually become more and more popular in society such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Nowadays, teenagers do not only use social media just talking with friends, but they also create social media as a place for them to discover information and express themselves. In fact, there are the number of teenagers who spend most of their time to post and check-in on Instagram. It is wondered whether social media has any negative effects on the individuals who use them usually. As the report “Instagram Is Killing Teen Girls’ Self-Esteem”, the author states that almost every girl teenager feels isolated and unsatisfied with what they have.
Proof that Social media has a negative effect on Society While arguments that promote the positivity of social media can be presented, it is evident that they are not substantial, and that social media is in fact negative for relationships in a people group. For instance, Teens and Technology would claim social media expands social circles, which is a positive claim for relationships. However, the authentic truth would reveal “31% of teens who use social media have fought with a friend because of something that happened online” (Lenhart, 2015). For this reason, it can be deducted that while online media produces a public knowledge of other individuals, it also harms existing relationships by generating online turmoil. Another common
Technology can be useful for many things like making information more accessible or communication. However, there are many disadvantages to technology. The article “Facebook Makes Us Sadder And Less Satisfied, Study Finds”, written by Elise Hu, is about how social media has a way of putting people down and upsetting them. In the article “No, Kids CAN’T study while they’re texting: Research finds teenagers struggle with multitasking”, written by Jenny Awford, talks about how teens have difficulty multitasking when technology is present. The article “Colleges grapple with cheating in the digital age”, by Carla Rivera, is about how college students use technology to cheat on their assignments.
According to the Pew Research Center survey, that majority of Americans use Facebook and YouTube, but young adults are especially heavy users of Snapchat and Instagram. We see social media as a great way to communicate and socialize, but most of us did not realize that social media “secretly” link to the Depression. Depression is a common mood disorder that affects the way we think and feel. One of the characteristics of depression is low self-esteem, and it can easily come from the unrealistic body figure comparisons and harsh judgments from the social media. According to a 2017 study by The Royal Society of Public Health indicted Snapchat and Instagram were the two to inspire feelings of inadequacy and anxiety in the age group between fifteen to twenty-five.
Usage of Youtube negatively affects teenagers causing them struggles in life. Youtube has been affecting teenagers safety, school work, and life style.
