Modern parents are so busy in their everyday activities that they often make the television their children’s baby sitter. They leave their children in front of the television for long hours just so they can go around doing their work. Little do they know that excessive hours of watching television can have a negative effect on their children. Television can have many harmful effects on a growing child, such as: poor performance in school, increasing health issues, promoting negative influences, behavioral problems, numbing of the mind and projecting false information. Children who tend to watch prolonged hours of television are said to have a poor performance in school. Children who watch a lot of TV have trouble paying attention to teachers because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on TV. They tend to also have a difficult time adjusting from being visual learners to learning by listening, as they do not talk to the family members. It is also said that they short attention spans, which makes it more difficult for them to concentrate on things (Tumbokon). School kids who watch too much TV also tend to work less on their homework. When doing homework with the TV turned on in the background, kids tend to retain less skill and information. When they lose sleep because of TV, they become less alert during the day, and this result in poor school performance (Tumbokon).
